UPDATE: Magneto (2011-2014)
X-Men Origins: Magneto seems to be the last spin-off on the mind of producer Lauren Shuler Donner and 20th Century Fox. Donner calls Goyer's script "brilliant" but doesn't know if it will ever get made. She also said the film could be made in like five years. They do have a large amount of projects in the works and Magneto might get axed to make way for other films. There also seems to be issues with who will eventually direct the film. David S. Goyer is trying to helm the project but with horrible attempts like Blade Trinity, The Invisible and The Unborn, I doubt Fox will allow this. Donner mentions casting a younger actor, "to find a younger actor to fill Ian's shoes, that's pretty daunting. It's not easy."
James McTeigue (V For Vendetta, Ninja Assassin) has been rumored to be directing. McTeigue himself said that unless Goyer steps down he wouldn't take an interest. He's been rumored to be in the running to make the next Superman film. I expect if Warners Bros. is interested in him , 20th Century Fox would be insane not to approach him for upcoming X-Men films. I wouldn't be surprised to see McTeigue rumored for Wolverine 2 or Deadpool.
Casting Thoughts
MTV's Movie Blog came up with some interesting names for a younger actors to play Magento, which gave me the idea to explore this. Donner has mentioned that they would be recasting becuase the digital de-aging is too expensive. So that leaves out Ian McKellan appearing in the film. MTV mentions actors such as Adrien Brody, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jude Law, Ewan McGregor and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Ewan McGregor (Men Who Stare At Goats) is the best name on the list. Ewan has grown on me ever since Trainspotting, he even made the last two Star Wars prequels bearable. I'd also include Matthew Goode (Watchmen, The Lookout) and James McAvoy (Wanted, Last King of Scotland) as decent choices.
There has also been talk that we could also see a young Charles Xavier in the film. While I don't see Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes, Road To Perdition) playing Magneto I wouldn't mind him playing Xavier. Paul Bettany (Gangster No.1, Da Vinici Code) is another actor who I picture as a young Professor X.
