Kevin McDonald's The Eagle of The Ninth (2010)
Oscar-winning director Kevin McDonald's will be reteaming with screenwriter for his next film. Based on the novel by Rosemary Sutcliff, it focuses on a Roman Legion in 2nd Century B.C. in Scotland The pair previously worked together on The Last King of Scotland, which earned an Oscar. He's also working on science fiction film based on the novel The End of Eternity by Isaac Asimov. Along with Bobby Fischer Goes to War, a film about the 1972 World Chess Championship in Reykjavik, Iceland, in which Bobby Fischer took on the entire Soviet chess establishment.
"In 140 AD, twenty years after the unexplained disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion in the mountains of Scotland, young centurion Marcus Aquila (Tatum) arrives from Rome to solve the mystery and restore the reputation of his father, the commander of the Ninth. Accompanied only by his British slave Esca (Bell), Marcus sets out across Hadrian's Wall into the uncharted highlands of Caledonia - to confront its savage tribes, make peace with his father's memory, and retrieve the lost legion's golden emblem, the Eagle of the Ninth."
CASTING
Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe, Public Enemies), Jamie Bell (Defiance), Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes, Robin Hood), Tahar Rahim (A Prophet) and Donald Sutherland. A majority of the cast seems perfect except Tatum. I really hope they've hired a vocal coach for him, because in 140 AD they didn't talk like Eminem. I liked McDonald's State of Play, although the casting of Ben Affleck almost ruined the film. So when I heard that he had cast Chatum Tatum it worried me. I don't think I've seen Channing in a role without his "street accent", so having him speak in a peroid piece seems odd.
