'AVENGERS' Smashes Domestic Opening Record With $200-205 Million, 12 Day Worldwide Total $650m

Early estimates had Avengers tracking for a opening around $130-170 million but the superhero epic has exceeded expectations. Deadline is reporting new estimated earnings that could see the film destroying the Harry Potter: Deathly Hollows Part 2 domestic opening record ($169m) by $35m with a possible $205. Even more impressive is that it's 12 day total worldwide take could end up being around $650m. It would be currently sandwiched between Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of The Black Pearl and Attack of The Clones. Having such positive reviews and word of mouth should give the film legs, so the money should keep rolling in.

This means that Marvel Studios could very well have their first billion dollar film. Giving them enough money to fund the rest of their backlogged projects. While they've already greenlit Iron Man 3, Thor 2 and Captain America 2, these new massive profits could lead to even more films going into production earlier than expected. Heroes like Ant-Man, Black Panther and Doctor Strange could finally get their due along with cosmic teams Guardians of The Galaxy and The Inhumans.

UPDATE: The new estimates put the domestic opening at $207m and worldwide total at $654m.
