Fincher & Mulligan For Dragon Tattoo Remake?

Sony is hoping to get director David Fincher attached to their American version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Previously Quentin Tarantino showed interested but it looks like Sony has other ideas. Vulture (NYMag) reports that the studio loves what Fincher has done with The Social Network and believes he could be the best director for the project. Of course Fincher is no stranger to crime thrillers with Se7en and Zodiac. The script is being currently written by Steve Zaillian adapted from the first novel in the trilogy. Zaillian previously wrote Schindler's List and American Gangster. They also report that recent Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan is on their wishlist to play Lisbeth Salander. There are internet rumors that George Clooney could play womanizing disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist.

The books have already been adapted into a trilogy in Sweden but most critics have mixed thoughts on them. While I very much enjoyed the first film it was a bit too long. Hopefully they can slim down the running time and possibility amp up the action/suspense.
