Tarantino Talks Western
We've been hearing a lot of talk of what could be next for Quentin Tarantino. He spoke to NY Daily News about his rumored Western project. It sounds like he's incorporated elements from his Inglourious Basterds prequel but using the Western genre. Previously he used the genre title "A Southern" when explaining his Basterds prequel that would feature Black soldiers taking on the KKK. He makes a good point why to make a slavery themed action film. I think it would be nice to see strong Black characters in a modern Western. I expect to see ex-Buffalo Soldiers or slaves taking on the KKK or Slave Traders. It's very interesting to see Tarantino tackling taboo subject matter and turning it into fascinating films.
“I'd like to do a Western. But rather than set it in Texas, have it in slavery times. With that subject that everybody is afraid to deal with. Let's shine that light on ourselves. You could do a ponderous history lesson of slaves escaping on the Underground Railroad. Or, you could make a movie that would be exciting. Do it as an adventure. A spaghetti Western that takes place during that time. And I would call it 'A Southern.”
I don't have the best knowledge of Black Exploitation Westerns but I'm sure Boss Nigger and Nigger Charley will be heavily influencing the film. They starred Fred Williamson (Dusk Till Dawn) one of the best exploitation actors ever, he even starred in the original Inglorious Bastards. It's interesting considering like the WWII exploitation action films it's hasn't been done since the 70-80's. When it comes to the slavery aspect I'm sure Mandingo and Drum which starred Pam Grier (Coffy, Jackie Brown) and Yaphet Kotto (Alien) will be influences.
