Rodriguez & Machete Find New Home At Fox

Deadline Hollywood is reporting on the bidding war for the domestic rights for Robert Rodriguez's co-directed Mexploitation action film Machete. While TWC who have a long standing history with the filmmaker passed on the the project. Understandably because of the disappointing Grindhouse experiment in 2007 and their finical troubles. Other studios seemed to be very interested in it.

The bidding opened up at a reasonable $9 Million and The Weinstein Company was offered it for only $3.5 Million. Paramount and Fox were interested even with the back end gross deal for Rodriguez. So when he went back to the studios with a new deal which included more gross and an overall production deal, both were shocked but Fox agreed. The studio had a previous working relationship with Rodriguez for the Predators. I could see the production deal including financing for Machete sequels along with Rodriguez's Nerveracker.

20th Century Fox has made some rather clever moves in the last year and this one is gaining my interesting in the studio again. They should try to capitalize on Rodriguez's usefulness as both producer and director for their projects. There are a few I could see Fox looking for Rodriguez to helm or have his Troublemaker Studios work on it's production. One being Marvel's merc with a mouth Deadpool. It's spectultion but I could see Fox trying to get Rodriguez somehow involved. Previously Ryan Reynolds said his dream director would be Quentin Taraninto but it's very unlikely. Rodriguez on the other hand could be just the right director for the unconventional comic book film.
