One thing most people who have been following the saga of the production of the recent Spider-Man film understood is that Sony was going to reboot the franchise with or without Spider-Man 4. So if Raimi couldn't make it work why prolong the reboot? I think Sam did enough with the three films and it was time for a new actor for Spider-Man. I mean Maguire could have said no to the fourth film and then where would we have been? The same position we are in now. I'm going to embrace this reboot until Sony gives me reason to start hating it.
When Sony hired screenwriter James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, The Losers) they had also had him start scripts for the eventual Spider-Man 5 and Spider-Man 6. It was expected those films would be apart of a two-part reboot with a new director and cast. From what it looks like those scripts are far enough along for Sony to announce the plans. We could be seeing both films go into production by the end of the year. The script is being called "gritty and contemporary" which could be good or bad depending on who they get to direct. I feel Raimi's wacky Spider-Man world lent itself to things that made Spider-Man 3 bad, the singing and dancing being a few examples. Changing it's tone to something more like Iron Man or Incredible Hulk which I'm sure Marvel Studios would have done if rights reverted back to them.
While we have no idea who they could be thinking for the cast there have been some directors in mind according to EW. Namely Marc Webb who recently had his directorial debut with 500 Days of Summer. Who I think has a similar Raimi style of story telling with more of a maturity and contemporary feel. The lesser of the three directors named were Gary Ross (Pleasantville) who had been rumored for Venom and Micheal "Make It Go Boom" Bay. I'd hate to see the last two take hold of two Spider-Man films. I could see someone less known like Webb given a chance to direct.
