Joss Whedon Says Avengers 2 Will Be Smaller And Personal

Avengers writer/director Joss Whedon spoke to SFX (via CBM) and gave a short statement on the direction the sequel will likely go. That said there hasn't been confirmation a sequel is even going to happen yet. There are plenty of other films still in development that Marvel has yet to roll out. Kevin Feige has previously stated that they had planned on rolling out a bunch of new characters before a second Avengers movie. It would make sense considering long-time members like Ant-Man, Wasp and Black Panther haven't even been introduced yet in the cinematic universe.

"By not trying to. By being smaller. More personal, more painful....By being the next thing that should happen to these characters, and not just a rehash of what seemed to work the first time. By having a theme that is completely fresh and organic to itself."

His statement is brief here but I get the impression smaller could mean the sequel might be tackling the Civil War storyline. Where Iron Man and Captain America end up leading their own teams that eventually clash over SHIELD's plan to have heroes and villains alike join SHIELD or be imprisoned.  A superhero film with the heroes at each other's throats would be something we've never seen before. That storm seems to have already been teased with the first film. Banner stating "we're not a team we're a ticking time bomb". Not to mention all the scenes of infighting already shown in the trailers. Like I've mentioned before this sequel happens Marvel wants to introduce their second phase of superhero films.
