A casting call for Marvel's Captain America: Civil War has seemingly found it's way onto a casting website called MovieCastingCalls (via ComicBookMovie) and they are revealing a key role in the film.
This wouldn't be a spoiler in the slightest if it's indeed on this casting call, but it names Daniel Bruhl's (Inglorious Basterds) character as the Captain America villain Baron Zemo.
We had been under the impression it could have been either Zemo or DoctorStrange villain Karl Mordo. Bruhl previously worked with Doctor Strange's Benedict Cumberbatch in The Fifth Estate and Thor's Chris Hemsworth in Rush.
The reason we thought it might be Mordo is that the role was said to possibly crossover to Doctor Strange, Zemo could easily fit into a film like Strange if he's really into a occult stuff.
If you want to give audiences a villainous version of Captain America, Zemo is the way to go. He eventually setups the group The Thunderbolts who actually aligned themselves with Stark during Civil War.
This isn't 100% proof of his role but if it's circulating on an official casting call it's a good chance that he's playing Zemo in the film.
Marvel has confirmed that Spanish-German actor Daniel Bruhl (Rush, Inglourious Basterds) has joined the cast of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. His co-stars being Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr, Chadwick Boseman (as Black Panther), Sebastian Stan, and possibly Jeremy Renner. Production is about to begin soon with the Russo Brothers back as the directors, I'm sure more casting news will spring-up soon. However, Marvel isn't revealing who Daniel will be playing in the film, making the role a bit mysterious.
Variety is reporting that Daniel will be playing one of the villains in the film, not the main one. We have kind of figured that Tony Stark would be a theological villain of the film. They add he might be the main baddie of Doctor Strange. Which sounds weird to me, since Strange and Cap don't really share villains.
It might be a safe to assume that Brhul has taken the role of Baron Zemo, or a modern take of the current head of the Zemo family. Who has been active for generations, including during World War I and World War II. During the second World War, becoming a rival of the Red Skull and a collaborator with the Nazis. The character was even teased in a piece of museum concept art from Winter Soldier, a snow-covered battle scene named OPERATION: ZEMO. He's one of the only WWII era villains still unused, and is actually even more well-known than HYDRA's Baron Strucker from Age of Ultron.
Zemo has connections with both The Masters of Evil and The Thunderbolts, the latter might end-up that team that Stark puts together for Civil War. There is a point in the comics where Stark get's desperate and starts recruiting villains to help him takedown Cap. The rumored Cap team for the film sounded like there weren't going to be many heroes siding with Tony Stark. We also know that James Gunn has been talking-up a Thunderbolts film being another Marvel property he wants to tackle. Crossbones is a member of both villainous groups, having him acting on the behalf of Zemo or The Thunderbolts could work very well.
The legacy villain has been a fan-favorite and finding a place for him in the film universe has been a bit tricky. I really do hope they use Zemo instead of resurrecting Red Skull, since this could be our last romp with Rogers as Captain America. Flashbacks would be nice, but since Zemo is replaced by the next generation he could be around in present time too.
The connection to Strange might suggest the role might be Baron Mordo. This doesn't make too much sense, since we likely won't be getting an appearance of Strange or his antagonists in Civil War. Then again, Black Panther villain Klaw might be in Age of Ultron and Panther being in Civil War. They could try to setup Stephen Strange in a similar way, since the two productions are filming in the same year. However, Mordor doesn't really have connections to the Civil War story as much as Zemo. There is some speculation that the two characters could be combined, but that sounds like a waste to me. It should be noted that Doctor Strange frontrunner Benedict Cumberbatch co-starred with Brhul in the Fifth Estate. Re-teaming the pair wouldn't be hard to imagine.
The only thing I don't like about Baron Mordo, is his name. We already have a Baron villain with Baron Strucker and his last name is eerily similar to Middle Earth's Mordor. I wouldn't put it past Marvel to try to combine Zemo and Mordo into one character.
I also wouldn't rule-out the more obscure John Flasworth aka Baron Blood. A Nazi vampire who just happens to be a that could fit into both Strange's occult universe and Cap world of Marvel being setup in Doctor Strange. Since he's a vampire he would be ageless, I'm not sure that's the type of villain that would be suited for Civil War.
TheWrap reports that two-time Oscar winning actor Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained, Inglourious Basterds) has landed a role in Sam Mendes' untitled Bond 24. His role is unknown but considering his iconic role as the Nazi Col. Hans Landa, it might be safe to assume he'll be playing the villain. This would sort of echo when Mendes cast Javier Bardem in role for Skyfall, after winning an Oscar himself for No Country For Old Men.
Production is expected to begin very soon with November 2015 release date set. The rest of the new additions includes Waltz's Basterds co-star Lea Seydoux and Guardians of The Galaxy breakout star Dave Bautista as the henchman.
A bit of speculation for the moment. We have been hearing rumors that producers are interested in bringing-back the iconic Blofeld back to the franchise. Now that they recently got the rights back to use the villain. There had even been chatter that he would make his return in next installment. When Ralph Fiennes was cast there was some notion he might have been playing him, before it was revealed he was apart of MI6. Could Waltz get away with playing Ernst Stavro Blofeld and bring back SPECTRE to the franchise?
Quentin Tarantino is finally moving forward with his next film The Hateful Eight. The script leaked last year and Quentin sounded like he was going to shelve the western all together. Calmer-minds prevailed and Quentin instead put-on a live-read of the script instead. Casting a majority of the roles with actors that would presumably be apart of the film as well. Shooting is expected to take place early next year, with a release date aimed for December, 2015. A similar date to Tarantino's commercially successful Django Unchained.
While it's assumed that Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson and others from the live read would be returning. Collider has word that a very popular actress is in talks for a role in the film as well. They claim that Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook, Winter's Bone, Hunger Games) could end-up taking a role in the winter-set western.
The role isn't mentioned, but prisoner Daisy Domergue might be a role that get's a recasting. Originally, Amber Tamblyn played the role during the L.A. live-reading. It's quite possible that Lawrence might be recast into the lineup, or that Quentin has added more characters during his recent rewrites. Tamblyn had a very brief cameo in Django, so it's possible she might be kept in her existing role as Daisy.
TheWrap has contacted Jennifer's reps, who deny any involvement in the project.
Let's just remember that Tarantino's current trend is to hire at least one bankable name for a key role in films. Brad Pitt was the big name attached to Inglourious Basterds, and Leonardo DiCaprio in Django Unchained easily helped it's box office numbers (becoming Quentin's most successful release). It's possible adding someone with the awards background and commercial success that Lawrence brings to the table, would be a viable reason to add her to the lineup.
Deadline reports that Brad Pitt is currently in talks to join the WWII era action film Fury written and directed by David Ayer (End of Watch, Ten). Ayer is likely best known for last year's End of Watch which he wrote and directed. He also wrote the screenplay for Training Day which earned Denzel Washington his Best Supporting Actor Oscar. Pitt would play one of the five men crew of an American tank named Fury during the last days of the German regime in 1945.
Director Marc Webb has tweeted a set photo including Office and Inglourious Basterds actor B.J. Novak. Which likely confirms that he'll have some sort of roll in Amazing Spider-Man 2. His role isn't mentioned but he might be linked to Oscorp.
Webb also revealed recently that this Oscorp security person seen above is played by Cal McCrystal.
While Quentin Tarantino is relishing in the current commercial and critical success of both Inglorious Basterds and the newly released Django Unchained. There had been talk of these films being apart of an unofficial trilogy. It had been thought that Christoph Waltz would be the key factor in all three films. The third film has been given a working title by Quentin according to an interview with TheRoot (via ThePlaylist). Tarantino envisions Killer Crow as a film that could include a lot of excluded material from Inglorious Basterds. There had been a sub-plot that included black soldiers that didn't end up making the film. Talk of a Basterds-prequel also hinted to this story of black WWII soldiers story being explored. He confirms that half a the Killer Crow script is already finished. While this sounds promising, recent talk from Tarantino suggests his 30's era gangster film could be closer to production.
"There's something about this that would suggest a trilogy. My original idea for 'Inglourious Basterds' way back when was that this [would be] a huge story that included the [smaller] story that you saw in the film, but also followed a bunch of black troops, and they had been f--ked over by the American military and kind of go apes--t. They basically -- the way Lt. Aldo Raines and the Basterds are having an "Apache resistance" -- [the] black troops go on an Apache warpath and kill a bunch of white soldiers and white officers on a military base and are just making a warpath to Switzerland... I was going to do it as a miniseries, and that was going to be one of the big storylines. When I decided to try to turn it into a movie, that was a section I had to take out to help tame my material. I have most of that written. It's ready to go; I just have to write the second half of it... That would be the third of the trilogy. It would be [connected to] 'Inglourious Basterds,' too, because Inglourious Basterds are in it, but it is about the soldiers. It would be called 'Killer Crow' or something like that."
It's more than likely Killer Crow will end up starring Jamie Foxx and Samuel L. Jackson along with actors that previously were trying out for the role of Django. They included Anthony Mackie, Idris Elba, Will Smith, Michael Kenneth Williams, Terrence Howard, Larenz Tate and Chris Trucker. The Swiss setting could also allow a new crop of talented European actors to be considered as well.
The Basterds will be back and it's expected that Brad Pitt's Lt. Aldo Raine will be returning. Depending on the film's timeline we could also see Eli Roth's Donny Donowitz as well.
Quentin Tarantino has stated to TotalFilm (via ThePlaylist) that his films Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained are apart of a trilogy. While he doesn't state what the next installment is it's very likely actor Christoph Waltz will have a role in it. The main theme of the last two pictures has been period pieces and which could hint to what is next. There has been talk of Quentin wanting to make a Pretty Boy Floyd-type gangster film. If I had to bet what was next for Tarantino it would be shooting this gangster film before rolling on the untitled sequel to Kill Bill.
"'Inglourious Basterds' and 'Django Unchained' bespeak a trilogy," the director says. "As different as they are, there is a companion piece quality. There might very well be a third one. I just don’t know what it is yet.”
A new press release via Twitch reveals that Eli Roth is finally making a return to directing with The Green Inferno. Roth had taken a break from directing to focusing on actor with roles in Inglourious Basterds and the upcoming horror thriller Aftershock. He had been talking up a possible studio project titled Endangered Species that had Brad Pitt teased as the lead. It's unknown if this is the same project with a new name as details are being kept quiet.
Michael Bacall is slightly better known as screenwriter writing for films like Scott Pilgrim, 21 Jump Street and Project X. Yet, he's also been acting since the 80's. You're likely more to recognize him from bit parts in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds and Death Proof than anything else he's done. So with Tarantino's American set Django Unchained already well into it's production Bacall was recently asked by ScreenCave (via ThePlaylist) if he'd be showing up in the film. Michael confirmed that he would be. It's another returning Tarantino player that I'm excited to see back in the saddle.
Deadline has learned that Michael Fassbender (Shame) has officially signed on to play the lead role in Ridley Scott's The Counselor. The hard-boiled thriller pits a respectable lawyer who believes he can dip his toes into the violent drug trade without it affecting him. His world spins out of control and tries to survive this desperate situation. Cormac McCarthy (The Road, No Country For Old Men) wrote the spec-script and hopefully this means the author will end up turning out more film scripts. It's expected that the film will start production in early May. They're also naming possible actors that could take the villain role they include Jeremy Renner, Bradley Cooper and Brad Pitt. It's not surprising since the film is being compared to the Oscar-winning film No Country For Old Men.
Pitt got his first big break from Ridley's Thelma And Louise so a re-team seems possible. He also worked with his brother Tony Scott on True Romance and Spy Games. There's also a connection with Fassbender as the two previously worked briefly together on Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. Not to mention that Pitt will have a cameo in Steve McQueen's (Shame, Hunger) 12 Years A Slave that also stars Michael that will be shooting this summer.
I wouldn't rule out Renner as a serious contender since he's known for these on edge roles. Jeremy earned two Oscar nominations for The Hurt Locker and The Town. He's seems to have completed his commercial projects with Ghost Protocol, Bourne Legacy, Avengers and Witch Hunters. I would assume he wants to get back into more awards friendly roles. Even if Pitt get's the part I would hope that Renner end's up with a meaty supporting role.
Deadline has yet another addition to the rather large cast of Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained. The spaghetti western that uses the backdrop of the Southern American slave trade has added character actor Evan Parke. Evan is best known for his role as Hayes in Peter Jackson's King Kong but also had roles in The Cider House Rules and Tim Burton's remake of Planet of The Apes. Parke's role isn't named but I assume it could be Clavin Candie's (DiCaprio) personal bodyguard, one of the bare-knuckle fighters or something completely different.
Some might remember there being a reference to the similar stories of the American slave and King Kong in the Inglourious Basterds bar scene.
