CAPTAIN AMERICA Writers Christopher Markus And Stephen McFeely Did Rewrites On THOR 2 Script, Plus Jaimie Alexander Comments On The Film

I must have missed this news but apparently Marvel Studios hired a few more writers to tackle rewrites on the script for Thor: The Dark World. Originally, it had been reported that Don Payne's (Thor, Simpsons) outline for the sequel was being reworked by Oscar nominated screewnwriter Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan, The Patriot). There is word that Marvel has hired some of their own in-house talent to work on the film. It's possible that Robert Rodat's work might have been excluded from the film entirely.


Christopher Yost who is best known for writing Marvel animated shows including Earth's Mightiest Heroes and Wolverine And The X-Men was brought on to work on the script. Not to mention the studio also hired Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus (Captain America: The First Avenger, Pain And Gain) to add some magic. It's unknown who did what but it sounds like the scale of the film could have been increased since McFeely and Markus seem to write big action set-pieces. A key element that was missing in the first Thor film. The screenwriting pair also recently completed the Captain America sequel Winter Soldier which is about to begin production in March.

Actress Jaimie Alexander who plays Sif in the Thor franchise is currently on a press tour for her upcoming film The Last Stand which stars Arnold Schwarzenegger. In an interview with IAmRouge she revealed a bit info on The Dark World, giving the impression the film is bigger (more realms being explored) and her character will be given more development (possible love triangle?). Jaimie also briefly comments on director Alan Taylor, new writers and the addition of Zachary Levi as Fandral. [IAmRogue]

“I just finished shooting about a week and a half ago. There's going to be a bit of a darker feel and obviously a lot more action. We get to explore different realms a lot more and you see a lot more Asgard; and you get to know the people of Asgard. There is more [character development] with Sif. We sort of explore the Thor-Sif relationship a little bit; kind of [in a romantic way]. It's more like getting a feel of who these people are, how the way they are with each other. It was really fun for me and Chris. Him and I are almost like brother and sister too, so I was like maybe that translates into 'ohh they love each other on camera.' We had a good time making that movie.” 

“That was hard at first [returning with a new director] because I didn't know what to expect. I love Kenneth Branagh very much He was a huge staple in my life because he launched my career. I gotta say, however, it is always great working with new people. Alan Taylor has brought a whole new vision to Thor. We've remained our own characters obviously, so there's still that similarity between the first and second one. But there's a darker feel to this one; a little more Gladiator-ish, a bit more viking-ish. So I'm really excited to see how it turns out.”

 “The script did [feel more rooted in the comic book stuff]. I could read certain scenes and actually see how someone would do the drawings on the page. With that sense, Marvel was great; they said 'make it your own.' We just have a great team. I have been very lucky in my career. It was slightly different [with Zachary Levi coming in], because he's not Josh Dallas, but he's fantastic. And I've know Zach for years. He was actually one of the first choices for Fandral, so it's great to have him on board. He's definitely Fandral, and he's such a lovely guy, team player and really sweet. Everybody welcomed him with open arms and he's definitely a part of the family.” 

Dwayne Johnson Confirms 'LOBO' Rumors

Lobo is finally moving forward with Brad Peyton set to direct replacing Guy Ritchie. Not too soon after that news it was rumored that Dwayne Johnson had been linked for the lead. Johnson himself answered a fan's question via Twitter which confirms he's at least in talks with producer Joel Silver and the studio.

“Rumors of me possibly playing LOBO are true. Joel Silver and Brad Peyton working on it now. That could be fun..”

'THOR: THE DARK WORLD' Casting Updates

Chuck actor Zachary Levi confirmed on The Tonight Show (via CBM) that he will indeed play Fandral in the newly titled Thor: The Dark World replacing Josh Dallas who exited the franchise. Levi had originally been pursued for the role but because of commitments to his NBC series (now cancelled) had to turn it down.

In other casting news Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen who had been wanted for the villain in the sequel has removed himself from talks (via ThePlaylist).

SPECULATION: Surtur Also A Possible Villain In 'THOR 2' ?

During a recent interview with MTV Chris Hemsworth was asked about the possibility of Thanos being the villain of Thor 2. Chris stated Thanos would be "too easy" and "we need a bigger fish". Could this mean giant fire god Surtur is on the table? There was a link to Surtur as well in Odin's Vault during the first film. The Eternal Flame was seen in the vault which is a mystical flame that cannot be extinguished. It was stolen from Surtur by Odin, Vili, and Ve Borson at the dawn of time so that Surtur could not light his sword and bring about Ragnarok. Without the Bifrost there isn't much stopping Surtur invading the other realms on the hunt for his sword and an army from Muspelheim invading Asgard to get his hands on the eternal flame.

Dwayne Johnson Hinting He's Joining A DC Comics Film?

Dwayne Johnson (G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Fast Five, Pain And Gain) is aiming to move into the world of comic book films. He's previously stated that he'd love a shot at Namor the Sub-Mariner and Luke Cage both excellent roles for film. Johnson was also loosely attached to play the god-like villain Black Adam in a possible Shazam! film. A recent response on Twitter gives the impression he very well could be in talks to join a DC movie. Unlike Marvel, there don't seem to be many options currently for the DC films.

The projects that come to mind are Lobo and Suicide Squad. One option is that he could end up playing a member of the group of DC villains forced into suicide missions as The Suicide Squad. Lobo is the closest to going into production as Brad Peyton replaced Guy Ritchie as the director. Brad will also make rewrites to the script which Don Payne (Simpsons, Thor, Thor 2) had originally wrote. To avoid another Jonah Hex or Green Lantern the studio will have to set the entire film on alien worlds and push for an R-rating. Lobo is a faul-mouthed violent biker bounty hunter who gives Superman a run for his money in hand-to-hand combat. He's one of the greatest DC anti-heroes and has been considered their version of Wolverine/Judge Dredd/Venom. Both seem like perfect movies for the new action star.

'THOR 2' Looking For Valkyries? Plus Idris Elba Talks And Kat Dennings Not Returning?

AICN revealed a casting-call sheet which is for looking for to fill roles in Thor 2. It seemly gives the impression that Marvel could be casting Asgardian warriors and The Valkyrior. Asgardian warriors are mostly men, so the assumption with the women they are casting would end up playing the fierce Valkyrie. We already know that this film will be mostly set in Asgard and the Asgardian population will be amped up.

We are starting to cast for a new blockbuster feature film about one of the Marvel super heroes.Filming will be starting this summer.

VALKYRIES: The Valkyrior are a great army of Asgardian female (mostly blond) warriors lead by Brunhilde a blond warrior who carries a spear and rides a winged horse. She is also known as the strongest of the Valkyries and would later become a Defender/Avenger. They were once tasked on carrying fallen Asgardians and humans from the battle field to the great halls of Valhalla which is the realm of fallen heroes. When humans evolved they were restricted from bringing them to Valhalla so not freak out the now enlightened population. 

Idris Elba is on the promotional machine for his summer blockbuster Prometheus. He talked to Collider and MTV about his role perhaps being expanded in the sequel. There had been hopes with the Bifrost destroyed that Heimdall would end up getting more screentime and action scenes. 

"I'm actually excited about it," Idris Elba said. "I literally just did a costume fitting the other day." Revealing that he has already seen an outline of the sequel's story, he's mostly anticipating Heimdall's expanded role. "Definitely Heimdall's more involved, but also, what's more involved is who the Asgardians are," he said. "I think we'll see a sense of that. It's a huge film, 'Thor 2,' but I also think it's micro in a way that you start to look at people, who they are a little bit more."

"I’d just like to get to know him a bit more. Who is Heimdall? He guards the gate. Okay. Is there anything else? I don’t know what is in the script because I haven’t read it yet. But, the audience has responded to Asgard and wants to know more about who lives there and what it’s about. I’m sure, if they do that, Heimdall will be featured more."

Actress Kat Dennings was left off the last official call-sheet for Thor 2 which confirmed the return of the majority of the cast. Dennings was the exception, seemingly confirming that Darcy wouldn't be back for the sequel. Kat did an interview with Crave which she confirmed Marvel hasn't contacted her about the film yet. It's not looking good if the rest of the cast is set for the August production in London and have some sort of outline/draft of the script. It might not be personal coming down to sacrifices made to move the production to London.

"You know, I don't know. Marvel is so tight lipped, you never know anything. So I have no idea."

With the production heading to London, the country has acting union laws which restrict the number of American actors allowed to work in the country on one project. Natalie Portman (Jane), Jaimie Alexander (Sif), Josh Dallas (Fendral) and Rene Russo (Frigga) are the American actors already set to return. Not to mention the new additions Marvel will likely add to the cast. Since the studio likely won't want to be limited to casting only Brits. Thor had been shot in New Mexico where they don't share the same union restrictions. There is always the possibility she could end up having a cameo or be added later into the production. Nothing seems to be set in stone at this point. 

Asgard To Get A Grounded Makeover In 'THOR 2'

SlashFilm spoke to Chris Hemsworth about Thor 2 and Asgard might be getting a major facelift from Marvel/Taylor. One problem I had with Asgard is that it didn't look large/realistic enough. It was completely CGI and looked too small to have other kingdoms roaming behind the hills. Even a few of the sets (Odin's Vault) looked like apartment lobbies and beyond too contemporary for a fantasy film based on Norse mythology. From what I gather from this statement Marvel is aiming to make Asgard look a little less science fiction and more grounded fantasy. "Organic" and "Norse" gives me thoughts of large brick towers, rolling grassy hills, natural waterfalls, lush forests and more of a magical environment we attribute to the Lord of Rings franchise.

"I have read a script and we start shooting in August. I met with Alan Taylor a couple of months ago and Natalie Portman and I and Alan and a couple of Marvel guys and it was hugely exciting. Ken [Branagh] did such a wonderful job and, with scheduling or what have you, he didn’t end up doing this one, but I’m a big fan of the GAME OF THRONES series, which is Alan’s latest work, and I think that is what’s exciting about the second one: making it sort of more tangible and having a more organic feel to Asgard and that world. I think the science fiction element to THOR… the danger is it falls a little bit into the world of it’s “tough to throw a light to.” I think of big waterfalls and mountains and a Viking influence, where the Norse mythology kind of grew from. Having that in Asgard is going to make it all the more special and that’s what Alan wants to bring to it. I think that would be the new aspect to this one. "


I get the impression that Hemsworth and Marvel have been influenced by both fantasy projects Snow White And The Huntsman and Game of Thrones which have grounded sets in a large fantasy world. 
It's hard to argue that Alan Taylor is going to infuse a lot of gravitas to Thor 2 as it's new director. Taylor is best known for his television work that includes directing episodes of Game of Thrones, The Wire, Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire. One sure thing is that he can handle large casts giving while having a deeply serious brooding tone to his direction. His recent work on Game of Thrones is beyond impressive the first two episodes of season two helmed by Taylor have been the highest rated episodes so far. The greatest aspect is that he's been able to give the right amount of time to each character when there is so many characters in one series. Even more so this season where we get a new character in every scene. If anyone can expand Asgard and it's population it's going to be Taylor.

More Romance And Loki Won't Be The "Big" Baddie In 'THOR 2'

While Loki will indeed figure into Thor 2 but Marvel's Kevin Feige tells Collider that the mischievous Asgardian will take as break as a main villain. It makes perfect sense considering that he's had enough of a villainous workload in both Thor and Avengers. It was previously announced that the cast of Asgardians would be doubled and that the sequel would explore the realms. This leads me to believe that the villain indeed won't be another citizen of Asgard. Which would exclude Amora The Enchantress and Skurge The Executioner.

"Loki has a part, but there will be a different villain, another big villain. But you can’t do a Thor movie without Loki."

Kevin also mentions that Odin (Hopkins) and Jane (Portman) will factor more in this film. Stating that Jane and Thor's romance in the first film is more of crush. The sequel will develop that relationship and we could actually see them actually making love connection.Thor has developed a large amount of female fans thanks to Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston, so it's not odd to see the romance levels amped up for the sequel.

"So while the relationship between Loki and Thor certainly has changed and has progressed, a lot of Thor 2 is picking up where it left off in terms of Jane, who you just saw for a moment on a computer monitor, and also what’s been going on in the nine realms without the Asgardians being able to use the Bifrost? I will just say it’s not good."


"Well it’s sort of the crux of the whole sequel and it’s what Hemsworth is most excited about diving into, and it’s what is the heart of story; it’s Thor and Jane, to continue that dynamic. Really they were only together for three days, and do they love each other? Do they like each other? Do they know each other? We’re acknowledging that that love story in the first movie was sort of a quick crush, essentially, over the course of three quick days in the middle of the desert. And [the heart of the movie is also] the relationship between Thor and Odin, which does change drastically as it did over the course of the first movie, and picks up and continues from there."


POSSIBLE VILLAINS FOR THOR 2

HELA GODDESS OF DEATH: Hela has been often pegged as Loki's daughter but things will likely change for the films. She is the ruler of the realms Hel and Nifflehiem wanting to expand her kingdom to include Valhalla the realm of dead heroes ruled by Odin. Her lust for power included a full scale attack on Asgard with her army of the dead. This seems like a great setup for second film which in terms of comic book franchises are usually the darkest films. With the Bifrost destroyed there isn't much holding Hela back from invading and conquering Valhalla.

Appointed Ruler and Goddess of the northernmost kingdom of the dead, allowing her to rule in the realms of Hel and Niffleheim. Although her dominion was only over those who did not die as heroes, as Odin was the ruler of these in Valhalla. Still, Hela often sought to expand her kingdom by conquering Valhalla as well which often brought Hela into direct conflict with both Odin and his son Thor.


Hela patiently waited for the chance to take over Valhalla and even forced her minions to build the enormous ship, Naflgar, out of the finger nails of the dead in order to attack Asgard, however this ship was destroyed by Skurge the Exocutioner and Hela was forced to begin reconstruction of the ship.

SURTUR: The fire demon is one of the oldest beings in the Norse cosmic universe and has a rather large beef with Odin and his brothers. It would be somewhat similar to the aged tension with the Frost Giants. Like Hela, Surtur could end up wreaking havoc on the other realms while the Bifrost is damaged. He previously made an alliance with the trolls which could come into play here. There was a looming threat that when the peace between Asgard and Jotunheim was broken it could lead to other conflicts.

"Surtur is a fire demon native to the extradimensional plane of Muspelheim land of the fire demons, located on the continent of Asgard, and first appears in the title Journey Into Mystery.[3] The character's first encounter with the Asgardian ruler Odin is told in flashback and establishes their enmity when Surtur is imprisoned by Odin inside the Earth after forming an alliance with the Trolls and trying to destroy the world, although he gives Odin a winged horse, hoping to be released one day.[4] Surtur reappears in the title Journey Into Mystery, having been freed by Odin's adopted son, Loki, who intends to usurp Odin and rule Asgard, having been given a portion of the Odinforce."

ULIK THE ROCK TROLL: Ulik is one of the few villains that has given Thor a run for his money during battles. He's been previously tasked by the troll king Geirrodur to steal Thor's hammer and to kidnap Jane Foster. The trolls could end up the orcs of the Thor franchise depending on the direction of the film. While in the comics they're slightly larger in the recent tie-in video game for the film they're even larger than the Frost Giants. There could be an alliance between Surtur and the Trolls leading to a full scale war on the realms and Asgard.

"Ulik belongs to a race of Rock Trolls who live in the dimension of Asgard in the "Domain of Trolls" in Nornheim. Like all trolls, Ulik has an innate hatred of the Asgardians as they were driven underground by the King of the Norse gods, Odin, and forbidden to live on the surface. Ulik is commanded by the Rock Troll King, Geirrodur, to steal Thor's enchanted hammer, Mjolnir, before an attempt to invade Asgard, leading to an extended series of battles with the Thunder God. Ulik proves to be a match for Thor, as the character possessing increasing strength and is equipped with knuckle dusters made of the metal uru (the same metal Mjolnir is composed of)."

Returning Cast For Thor 2 Confirmed, Loki Is Back

Just off the heels of the casting call sheet for Iron Man 3 appearing online the same website DisneyFilmCasting also posted one for Thor 2. It was teased the sequel would bring back both Loki and Jane Foster while expanding the cosmic universe bringing audiences to new worlds. The film will be shoot this Spring/Summer in London with a November 15th 2013 release date. Additional casting announcements are expected as another Marvel mandate was that the population of Asgardians in the sequel would be doubled.

 Returning for this second "Thor" installment is virtually the entire main cast from the original film. People's Choice Award and Teen Choice Award nominee Chris Hemsworth as Thor; Academy Award winner Natalie Portman as Jane Foster; Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins as Odin; BAFTA Award nominee Tom Hiddleston as Loki; Screen Actors Guild Award and Teen Choice Award nominee Stellan Skarsgård as Erik Selvig; Golden Globe winner Idris Elba as Heimdall; British actor Ray Stevenson as Volstagg; Asian Film Awards nominee Tadanobu Asano as Hogun; Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films nominee Jaimie Alexander as Sif; Kentucky native Joshua Dallas as Fandral; and Screen Actors Guild Award and MTV Movie Award nominee Rene Russo as Frigga.

Venture Bros. Creators Want To Make Doctor Strange

Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick the creators of the infamously funny adult themed cartoon series Venture Bros. is again commenting on the  Doctor Strange film. The series is a giant love letter to adventure junkies including references from Johnny Quest, James Bond and pretty much every single Marvel comic ever made. The character Dr. Orpheus is pretty much a comedic parody of Doctor Strange himself.

I can't believe I missed this but during the NY Comic Con back in December, Doc joking commented on still not being contacted by Marvel about Strange. Hammer also states he has notebooks full of ideas of how to make an entertaining Strange movie and even gives a gab at their current choice of screenwriters. The screenwriting pair that have been tasked to write the script recent credit is the Conan reboot which was a total disaster and bomb at the box office.



I get a strong feeling that these two have a great vision and that they could end up putting something together on the level of Edgar Wright's Ant-Man. Considering they are equally comedy writers as they are great at creating wild action scenes. Doc and Jackson seem to honestly care about and are massive fans of Strange. Personally I think the pair should at least be given a shot at a rewrite of the current script on spec. Which I assume they'd be willing to do if not handing in their own script as well. At the moment Doctor Strange has neither a director or even a release date.

Marvel Studios seems to be one of the more open-minded studios and has given many directors and writers big feature breaks. Similar to Disney they are very creative focused and having these two aboard could have nothing but great results. The pair also bring their rabid Venture Bros' fans to table which seems to be the target audience to begin with. In my opinion Doc and Jackson would be an asset to bring onto a film like this. It wouldn't be that different than when Marvel hired Simpson's writer Don Payne to write Thor and now it's sequel.

Thor 2 Production Moved Up To This Spring

Marvel has a slew of projects about to go into production in 2012. Reportedly Iron Man 3, Thor 2 and Captain America 2 are all shooting within the year. The production start for Thor 2 has been sort of a mystery since it's gone from fall to early/late summer. Tom Hiddleston now tells the BelfastTelegraph that it will begin shooting in London this spring. It's going to be an interesting experiment for both Iron Man and Thor sequels to be shooting at the same time. 

Robert Rodat To Do Rewrites On Thor 2 Script

Deadline reports that screenwriter Robert Rodat has been brought on to do some late rewrites on the Thor 2 script before the summer production start in London. It's interesting that Marvel would be pushing rewrites since pre-production I assume is already underway on the Thor sequel. Rodat is best known for writing Saving Private Ryan and The Patriot but was also involved with writing Sam Raimi's adaptation of Warcraft. Rewrites are a common thing, the original Thor film was also written by Don Payne but writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz added to the script in a similar way.

RUMOR: Alan Taylor Front-Runner To Direct Thor 2?

Questionable sources are saying that television director Alan Taylor is now in talks with Marvel Studios to helm Thor 2. Patty Jenkins (Monster) and Brian Kirk (Game of Thrones, Luther) were both involved in different stages before the studio went on another director search. Taylor's name recently came up and seemed like a solid choice considering he's been involved with a bunch of successful series.

His extensive TV directing credits include Oz, The West Wing, Six Feet Under, Deadwood, Lost, Rome, The Sopranos, Mad Men, Nurse Jackie, Bored To Death, Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones. Alan has ran the gamete of almost every genre possible and seems perfect for the multiple layered Marvel cinematic universe. If he doesn't get the Thor 2 gig, Marvel would be smart to nab him for a future project. Pre-production will need to begin soon to meet the projected September production start date.

Game of Thrones Directors Alan Taylor And Daniel Minahan In The Mix For Thor 2

HeatVision reports that Marvel is looking at other directing options now that Patty Jenkins is off Thor 2. Two names that have come up are Alan Taylor (Boardwalk Empire, Sopranos, Mad Men) and Daniel Minahan (True Blood, Deadwood) who both have directed episodes of Game of Thrones among other television shows. Marvel seems to be hot for anyone involved with Game of Thrones since Brian Kirk another director of the series was in early talks to helm the sequel. If I had to guess the stronger of the two directors it would be Taylor since his credits seem to be stronger. No offers have been announced but they'll have to move quickly and push ahead with pre-production.

They also mention a few screenwriters who could work on Don Payne's current draft of the script. The writers include Sheldon Turner, John Collee (Master And Commander), Robert (Saving Private Ryan) and Roger Avary who was Quentin Tarantino's writing partner on Pulp Fiction. The two (Tarantino/Avary) went on to win an Oscar for the screenplay. Strange to see Roger's name in the mix because he was just released from a one year prison sentence. After a drinking and driving accident that killed his passenger. Disney doesn't seem like the company to hire ex-cons to write their family films I can only imagine the backlash during the press tour.

Marvel rushed into Iron Man 2 putting together a haphazard script that made you give up on caring for Stark and didn't up the action from the first film. Hard to believe since the first 40 minutes of the first film he was in a cave just building shit. Tony was mainly wining and self-centered in the sequel reverting back to his former dicky self, which basically threw out any character development from the first story. There have been concerns that Avengers sub-plots could invade Thor 2 similar to Thor and Iron Man 2, hijacking the Thor side of things. Along with hindering the expansion of the cosmic world of the realms. I'm hoping that there is limited to almost zero interaction on Earth and we finally get a solid good look at Asgard, it's people and the rest of the realms. I want what most fans are looking for a Thor adventure not Avengers 1.5. Iron Man 3 seems to have been spared this interconnection as that film will be an Iron Man only affair.

Hemsworth, Hiddleston, Dallas & Branagh Comment On Patty Jenkins

Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Joshua Dallas (Fandral), even producer and former director Kenneth Branagh weigh in on new director Patty Jenkins.  It seems like an overwhelming wave of positivity coming from the cast and it sounds Marvel is excited by her take on the material. Thor 2 which is slated for a November 15th 2013 release.


Tom Hiddleston: "[She is] an absolutely amazing director" and that 'Monster' is "one of my favorite films. I'm so excited that Marvel has given the reigns to a director who has such of an incredible grasp of story, performance and complexity. I think her handling of the characters and the arc of the story in 'Monster' and what the story is about on the whole is really, really fascinating. I'm sure it's going to take us on another adventure somewhere that's entertaining and funny in some capacity, and the fact that Patty is at the helm is really, really exciting."

Chris Hemsworth:  “She has a great take on the story and a solid grasp on that kind of universe,” Hemsworth said in his meeting with Jenkins she seemed like a filmmaker worthy of picking up the franchise’s cinematic hammer “Branagh read every comic book he could get his hands on,” Hemsworth said. “She also looked like she had done her homework.”

 Kenneth Branagh: "Monster was, I think, an absolutely sensational film. I think that she’s a great talent. As a possibility in the mix, I think that’s a tremendous idea."

Joshua Dallas: "We are! We are planning a return to Asgard, next year. Thor 2 is happening. A great director called Patty Jenkins is directing the sequel. Ken [Branagh] is not directing, which is obviously a huge shame, because he came in and created that world and created the language and the look of the whole thing. But he's kind of set it all up for us and I think he's staying on as a producer. But yeah, there's going to be some more adventures in the Nine Realms."

"I haven't yet, no. But apparently Marvel are in love with her and I'm sure she is going to be a really exciting and interesting choice. She's done some great work before. Marvel always have a really good idea for those directors that are going to come in and they may seem out of left field, but they always have a plan and they're always really smart. And that's what's so great about working for Marvel, because not only are they movie producers and they make these great movies, but they're comic book guys and they love it and they love the characters and they love the stories."
