The 14 month shooting schedule will start sometime in June. It's still expected that the first film will be released in December 2011 and the second on December of 2012. Guillermo del Toro will direct the film with co-writer/producer Peter Jackson overseeing it's production. WETA will of course handle the practical and special effects on the project.

It's been said the film will be very faithful to the original novel. Yet Jackson and screenwriters have used the information from other Tolkien books to expand the film. This means the two films will be larger and be an epic precursor to the Lord of The Rings trilogy.

Guillermo del Toro has talked about expanding the Goblin culture and I'm sure they'll play a bigger role in the film.

Gandalf The Grey, Gollum, Elrond and Galadriel will be featured in the film.

I assume composer Howard Shore will return to score both films.

UPDATE: Recently SpoilerTV got ahold to copy of the casting call sheet. It lists some familiar characters from the novel along with a new female Elf warrior named Itaril. It was later reported on TheOneRing that most of the characters on the list weren't even principle leads. I do however expect the character of Itaril could actually be a lead. Peter Jackson has also talked about casting unknowns again for roles. I've come up with some ides for the casting. I expect the casting for the dwarves will be the majority of the unknown actors so I'm not going to bother casting for all of them.
