Ghost In The Shell (2012-2014?)
Based on the manga series that spawned two anime films and a television series. Ghost In The Shell focuses on a special forces group of police that fight hacking/cyborg-related crimes. It's understood that the live-action film may have a futuristic American setting, perhaps New York City. Although, the original is set in Japan that aspect may cause problems with production and casting.
Steven Spielberg will produce along with Marvel Entertainment's Avi Arad. After the severing of the deal between DreamWorks and Paramount, Universal Pictures may step in as they did with Tintin. Spielberg could look to producing friend Peter Jackson and Weta Workshop to help with the production. It's unknown at this point who will end up with the directing duties. Jamie Moss (Street Kings) is being tapped to write a first draft of the screenplay. While it more than likely will see a few more rewrites from other screenwriters. The live-action adaptation might end up being released as early as 2011.
UPDATE: It's unlikely we won't see the film go into production anytime soon. Yet there is some interesting updates when it comes to the script. They've hired Laeta Kalogridis who helped write Avatar and adapted Shutter Island for Martin Scorsese to rewrite the script.
Casting Thoughts:
Kate Beckinsale or Evangeline Lilly as Major Motoko Kusanagi
Ron Pearlman as Batô
Josh Harnett as Togusa
Ryan Reynolds as Ishikawa
