Sony Rumored To Have Allowed SPIDER-MAN To Be Apart Of AVENGERS INFINITY WAR

He's just your friendly intergalactic Spider-Man.

There's been some clear signs post-Amazing Spider-Man 2 that the franchise is in real creative trouble and Sony Japan the people who pay the bills at Sony Pictures want things fixed soon. The company has been losing billions in most divisions and the studio isn't making huge strides compared to competitors like 20th Century Fox, Paramount or Disney.

Before the Sony email hacking leaks there had been chatter of Marvel and Sony getting together for a Spidey summit in January. The studio division was being pressured by Sony Japan to work something out with Marvel to obviously help the dwindling franchise which is seeing it's box office decrease with each installment.

We since had been trying to figure-out what was legit and what was bullshit from the Sony email leaks as many stories/rumors started flooding the film news cycle.

Goodbye Andrew.
Stories started coming out like Sony wanting to reboot Spider-Man a second time without actor Andrew Garfield who would be seemingly recast. Talk of his firing become a heated topic but a likelihood considering of the piss-poor job the films had been doing.

This had been a story over at Badass Digest even before the leak, suggesting that Sinister Six would be the film Sony would reboot the franchise. I have to assume this is a serious possibility and might be the end of Garfield as Peter Parker.

There was even talk that the studio would want to bring Parker back to high school and would mean a much younger actor would be replacing Garfield in the role.

22 Jump Street directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were linked to three different Spider-Man film projects including an animated film, replacing Marc Webb for Amazing Spider-Man 3 and being on Sony producer's wish-list to direct the reboot. It looked very likely the pair could be taking over the franchise soon.

The Russo Brothers pitched producing this new film to Sony and was chatter of Marvel Studios stepping-in to handle it's production. The Russos just released Captain America: The Winter Soldier last year, are about to being production on Captain America: Civil War and are apparently set to direct Avengers Infinity War. If Spider-Man is apart of the latter film, it could make sense to see them produce solo films in the future.

All things I'm sure fans would love to see happen but most of these ideas haven't been exactly confirmed by any recent reports.

Game on!

According to Latin Review, Sony has reached some sort agreement with Marvel and Spidey could indeed be apart of the lineup in Avengers Infinity War Part 1.  It had been said earlier that Sony missed it's window to have Parker a major player in Captain America: Civil War.

I won't to go into detail about their reasoning why Spider-Man is in the film but there are some extensive spoilers for Phase Three films within that write-up. Be warned, most of the films will be spoiled if you click-on and read Latino Review's story.

However, I can add which characters Latino Review believe are possibilities to appear in the film. They include Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Black Panther, Doc Strange, Ant-Man, Wasp, Captain Marvel, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Old/New Inhumans, Guardians of The Galaxy and any other cosmic characters. Oh, and Spider-Man.

I assume in the films leading-up to Infinity War we'll see the rise of Thanos with him getting his hands on all the infinity stones along with the gauntlet. As seen in the teaser footage for the film at the Marvel event back in October he will end-up getting these cosmic weapons.

This is a good move on the part of Sony as it raises the profile of the character and makes him cohesive to the wildly successful Marvel cinematic universe. Having Marvel getting involved is a huge bonus since they've been able to figure-out how best to use their characters cinematically.

Marvel has already shown how they could incorporate this character into their universe via The Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon series. Establishing the young hero as apart of the ranks of S.H.I.E.L.D. with Director Nick Fury as his mentor.

I'm curious if the cartoon will influence any of the direction Marvel will go with their take on Spider-Man.

The only draw-back I could see is that Sony asking Marvel to make their Spider-Man films in the future could slow-down the Marvel movie slate which we just saw bumped-up to three a year starting in 2017.

Then again, this is a rumor and could very well turn out not to be the case, so keep that in mind.

RUMOR: Marvel Studios Wants A Post-CIVIL WAR Teenaged SPIDER-MAN For Solo Reboot?

Take the following as a straight-up rumor, considering this isn't coming from DailyBeast. ComicBookMovie is claiming to have discovered an email from a Sony executive that reveals Marvel's plan for a Spider-Man reboot. That they don't want to have him involved with Captain America: Civil War, instead having him living in the wake of those events. Wanting Peter Parker to be a teenager still in high school and living in Queens with Aunt May.

I have to assume this means Peter gets his powers after Civil War, which would explain his absence in all the New York events in Phase 1-3 and Hell's Kitchen centric Netflix shows. A better angle than some unconvincing plot that would force Andrew's Spidey into the MCU.

I'm curious if Drew Goddard's (Daredevil, Cloverfield, Cabin In The Woods, The MartianSinister Six due out in 2016 will indeed be the first installment of this reboot. BadassDigest suggested this was the talk at the studio before the Sony leak, so it's extremely possible. CBM also mentions that Marvel wants a second solo film out in theatres before 2019. This makes obvious sense to keep pushing releases, I'm sure Sony would be ecstatic for that to happen.

The Russo Brothers are apparently angling to produce the new series of films, not directing. As they have four other large productions to focus on with Captain America: Civil War, The Gray Man, Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Avengers: Infinity War Part 2. These films would likely stop them from making a Spider-Man solo outting before 2020. Which doesn't mean Spider-Man would be excluded from The Russos' Infinity War movies. I just don't see them jumping from Avengers/Captain America to focus on solo Spider-Man, outside of a producing role.

Potential directors for the reboot could include Sony darlings Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street, Lego Movie, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 1-2), as revealed in a leaked director's list that was pitched to the studio. It also included high-profiled directors such as Brad Bird, Edgar Wright, James Gunn and Joe Cornish. Lord/Miller have been linked to this reboot, replacing Marc Webb on Amazing Spider-Man 3 and even an animated Spidey feature. I'm sure Sony will be pitching the duo hard to Marvel.

They also claim that the first crossover into the Marvel cinematic universe could be with Avengers: Infinity War. Something I've been saying since the possible deal emerged, as we constantly keep hearing the ship has sailed on any major role. Infinity War would allow Parker's science knowledge and heroics to play equal parts, also allowing the origin of Venom to be explored.

This is seemingly yet another in a list of reasons why Andrew Garfield isn't returning as Peter Parker. Even with all the fan campaigns and twitter hashtags, it's never going to happen folks. That's mostly due to Sony's rumored (via LatinoReview) firing of Marc Webb, Andrew Garfield and even possibly removing producer Avi Arad from the franchise. Scrapping pretty much everyone involved with the current blundering series of films. The age range would also seemingly put fan-favorite Donald Glover out of the running. Hopefully Marvel and Sony still consider him for the on screen version of Miles Morales.

We haven't heard anything concerning names in the mix for the recasting but some interesting ones have been put out there on Twitter. I've been mentioning rising actor Tye Sheridan (Mud, Scouts vs Zombies, Yellow Birds, Dark Places, Tree of Life, Joe) for the role as he just turned eighteen making him a prime candidate for the teenage Peter Parker.

Another suggestion points to Maze Runner's Dylan O'Brien who is slowly getting some fan support and being in his early twenties could pull off a high school kid. Remember Jonah Hill was almost the same age as Seth Rogen when he took the lead role in Superbad. Let's just not mess around by hiring another actor pushing 30.

Slightly younger than Dylan is Logan Lerman (Gamer, Fury, Perks of Being A Wallflower, Percy Jackson, Noah), who revealed to press about being in early talks for the Spider-Man reboot. HitFix reported back in 2010 that they thought he was a lock for the first reboot. Deadline trashed the story with a direct quote from Sony, who hired Garfield instead. Four years later and we're still considering him for the role, which has some backing by LatinoReview. Here's what Logan told to AccessHollywood back in 2010.

“It’s just, you know, conversations are starting. It’s a long process with the studio and the producers and everything. But it’s definitely a project that I’m really interested in, of course. I’d love to focus on the human element a little bit more. It’d be such a fun experience.”

Fan demand has possibly influenced Marvel's recent casting of fan-favorites Chadwick Boseman for Black Panther and Benedict Cumberbatch for Doctor Strange. Since both had huge backing of the online fan and blogging community. If Marvel indeed gets creative control, I'm sure they'll be keeping fan suggestions in mind during the recasting.

It's been rumored that Marvel's Kevin Feige will be attending the Sony's Spidey summit next month. Even more broad claims have been made that the deal has already been made, and the fine details just have to be worked-out between the two studios. I'm still in the belief it's only a sure thing when Marvel announces their involvement, which they haven't. Considering a deal hasn't been made don't expect Marvel or Sony to rush into casting just to put a Peter Parker cameo in Civil War either.

Kevin Feige Rumored To Attend SPIDER-MAN Summit And Why I Don't Buy Russos Directing Reboot

Unproven site ScreenGonzo is claiming to have a "scoop" concerning Sony's Spider-Man reboot and the summit taking place in January. They go on to say that Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige will be there and will want to see Avi Arad removed from the franchise. Feige being there to workout a deal with Sony for shared rights to the character, and their help producing a new trilogy. Avi has been seen as the real problem creatively with the franchise, and his unwillingness to take suggestions from filmmakers. We've heard that Webb kept hitting walls with the producer, when his input was unwanted during production. Marvel coming into the picture would mean they get creative control and that would mean goodbye to Avi, this I believe is just a fact of doing business if Marvel is involved.

They also mention that the Russo Brothers are going to be writing and directing this new trilogy. A few things seem fishy about this one and we'll come back to that later.

It's sort of a case of an educated guessing here via the leaked emails. We know that Kevin Feige would be involved in any meeting between Sony and Marvel Studios, that's sort of a no-brainer. We actually haven't heard from other sources that Marvel will be in attendance. The thing we do know is that Sony is now open to the idea of working with Marvel, thanks to a nudge by Sony Corp. An invite to have Marvel attend is very likely.

They go on to mention that Kevin Feige wants Avi Arad out of the producing role. Again, another educated guess and something we've already seen hinted to in an email between Amy Pascal and The Russos. Where the brothers pitch to Pascal about producing the new trilogy (not directing or writing) and having "tough" talks with Arad. If this was their grand pitch to Sony, why not include the bit about the desire to direct the films?

The biggest problem I have with this "scoop" is the part about the Russo Brothers directing a new trilogy. First, Sony seems hellbent on pitching Phil Lord and Chris Miller for the directing dig. They've been connected to Amazing Spider-Man 3, this reboot and an animated film, Sony is going to pitch hard for them to make the trilogy.

Second, they are directing The Gray Man and then two intallments of Avengers: Infinity War , which will take-up their time until 2019. I highly doubt that Sony is willing going to wait until 2020 to release another solo Spider-Man film. That's going to be five years without the studio raking-in profits from an installment, something that sets-off alarm bells for me. Sony is having serious problems with losses and they aren't going to sit on their biggest property for five years. Only releasing Sinister Six in five years makes zero sense to me.

Another problem I have is why would Marvel allow the creatives who are spearheading Phase Three just leave for a shared venture like Spider-Man? I'm sure the Russos will have a huge role in Phase Four, factor in the possibility that Joss Whedon and James Gunn might be done after their two films. They won't have the people to head-up Phase Four is they are busy directing a new Spidey trilogy.

I'd also like to point-out that Sony's wish-list for reboot directors is from November, which is around the time of this exchange between Sony and the Russos. You'd think their names would be on the list, but they are not. I believe that they will only be providing services as producers, as I've already pointed-out that Kevin Feige is already too busy with his duties with in-house Marvel Studio projects. It's extremely unlikely he'll take a hands-on producing role here, beyond casting and shaping the vision for it. The Russo Brothers seem like in better shape to help godfather the interests of Marvel as producers of the new trilogy.

Again, we'll see what happens because I do believe a lot of ideas will be on the table at this summit.

Sony Wanted Phil Lord And Chris Miller To Replace Marc Webb For AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3

Another piece of information confirms how badly Sony wants Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Lego Movie, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street) involved with their Spider-Man franchise. An email leaked from October via TheDailyBeast has the co-president of production talking about the directing pair replacing Marc Webb on Amazing Spider-Man 3. Granted this was back in October, but we also have emails with Sony wanting them to handle an animated film.

Producer Jeff Robinov pitched a reboot idea to Sony which included a massive wish-list of creatives and directors. Lord/Miller just happened to be among those names, it's likely the studio darlings could be at the top of the pack and could be pitched to during this summit in January. All signs are seemingly pointing to these two being Sony's choice.

Edgar Wright, Joe Cornish, Brad Bird And Lord/Miller On Sony's List To Reboot SPIDER-MAN

TheDailyBeast has picked-up on the biggest news concerning Sony's Spider-Man reboot. A list of directors and writers that could help pump new blood into the failing franchise. The email from November between Amy Pascal and producer Jeff Robinov (Her, Don Jon, The Master) suggests the reboot rehashing the origin (something we don't want a third time). Including a wish-list of directors who feels he could reboot the franchise with. Robinov isn't the only producer making a pitch to Sony, we know The Russo Brothers have also made an offer.

Below is the crazy awesome list of director hopefuls Robinov was considering.

Brad Bird, Chris Buck & Jennifer Lee (Frozen), Damien Chazelle (Whiplash), Joe Cornish (Attack the Block), Glenn Ficarra & John Requa (Crazy, Stupid, Love), James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), Don Hall & Chris Williams (Big Hero 6), Phil Lord & Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie), Joachim Rønning & Espen Sandberg (Kon-Tiki), Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World), Edgar Wright, and David Yates, of Harry Potter franchise fame.

I think Edgar Wright might be done with Marvel properties for while and Brad Bird is wishful thinking. However, we do have confirmation Wright is a fan, as seen above rocking a Spidey halloween costume.

James Gunn is an interesting one, mainly because Spider-Man villain Venom has connections to both Guardians of The Galaxy and Thunderbolts. The latter team could get a film if Gunn got his way, as he's been mulling-over a potential feature adaptation. It's unknown if will be ever happen, but it's to think what Gunn could do with the Spider-Verse and connecting it to the MCU. It's just unlikely since he's way too busy with getting a Guardians sequel ready for May 2017.

I'm sort of rooting for Phil Lord and Chris Miller here, since they've proved the can handle all types of comedy and action with Lego MovieCloudy With A Chance of Meatballs and Jump Street. Sony has been trying to get the pair to run their animation division, along with making an animated Spidey film. Having excellent relationship with Sony could help them greatly moving forward. If Marvel does or doesn't help with the new films, I think they could collaborate greatly with those producers. The directors get characters, diversity, gender-equality, action sequences and comedy. If you ask me the perfect type of creatives to handle a reboot like this.

Will Lord/Miller get the bump from Sony to make the live-action reboot?

Jeff Robinov's new origin pitch would have a direct connection to Kraven The Hunter, a fan-favorite villain who has never made it into the films. Kraven is expected for the lineup for Drew Goddard's Sinister Six lineup. He's also suggesting that Spider-Man become an adult, is this where Ryan Gosling fits in?

I might suggest looking at what is widely thought to be the most beloved Spider-Man storyline of all time – “Kraven’s Last Hunt” – which ran across Amazing Spider-Man #293-294, Spectacular Spider-Man #131-132, and Web of Spider-Man #31-32. (In fact, Comic Book Resources polled their readers in 2012, and this storyline was voted as the single greatest Spider-Man storyline of all time.)

In it, Kraven the Hunter tracks down Spider-Man, shoots him repeatedly, and leaves him for dead, buried underground. He then dons a Spider-Man costume and savagely starts attacking criminals.
