Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson And Antonio Banderas Confirmed For EXPENDABLES 3, Bruce Willis Exits

EW confirms that Mel Gibson will indeed play the villain of Expendables 3 with Stallone's Assassins co-star Antonio Banderas. The two will be next seen together in Machete Kills. It was also revealed earlier this week that Harrison Ford has joined the cast while Bruce Willis has exited the film. The rest of the new cast includes Wesley Snipes, Jackie Chan and Milla Jovovich.

Mel Gibson To Play Villain In EXPENDABLES 3?

Showbiz411 is reporting that a source confirms to them that Mel Gibson will have a role in Expendables 3. The Aussie actor turned director actually had been put out as a directorial contender by Sly Stallone via Twitter earlier in the year. However, fellow Australian director Patrick Hughes (Red Hill) ended up landing the gig. Gibson's role is being linked as one of the villains of the third installment. They also state that Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger will also be reprising their roles as well.

Mel recently took on the main baddie part in Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills and was wanted for another villainous part in Sin City: A Dame To Kill For (which likely didn't workout). I personally really enjoyed Mel's last action outing, so I'm sort of excited to see him getting back to his action roots ala Mad Max and Lethal Weapon. The rest of the new additions might include Wesley Snipes, Jackie Chan, Nicolas Cage and Milla Jovovich.

Wesley Snipes Confirmed For EXPENDABLES 3 Joining Fellow Newbie Jackie Chan, While A Director Hasn't Been Locked Down

AICN reports and Sly confirms that Wesley Snipes (Blade, Demolition Man, Money Train) has joined the new lineup of Expendables 3. Jackie Chan also joined the cast a while back but a director hasn't been announced yet. Stallone recently teased that he was considering Mel Gibson (Braveheart) while previously John Woo (MI2, Hard Boiled, The Killer, Face/Off) had been linked as well. No word if Sly is still pursuing other actors such as Nicolas Cage, John Travolta, Harrison Ford, Sigourney Weaver and Gina Carano.

Sly Stallone Testing Waters For Mel Gibson To Direct EXPENDABLES 3

This is a bit of a shocker since we've been hearing that John Woo could be helming Expendables 3. Today, Sly took to twitter to ask fans if he should considering having Mel Gibson direct the film. I have to admit that Braveheart is one of the greatest films of the 90's so having him direct could be a giant upgrade from Simon West. Gibson recently took a villain role in the Robert Rodriguez film Machete Kills. I'd love to see a Tequila Sunrise/Tango And Cash reunion with Mel and Kurt Russell. No word if Sly has actually gone after Gina Carano (Haywire, Fast And Furious 6) for a role which he previously had teased. Wesley Snipes has been also been linked for a role.

Has Zoe Saldana Joined 'MACHETE KILLS'?

MovieHole has word from Machete himself Danny Trejo that Machete Kills has yet another lady joining the cast. He states that Zoe Saldana has joined the cast and he's going to have a bit of love scene with her. It's not hard to imagine Zoe joining the action junkie flick with roles in Colombiana, The Losers, Avatar and Star Trek 1-2.

“The sequel to Machete, Machete Kills is going to be a lot more over-the-top than Machete. We’ve got Sofia Vergara, who is a star in her own right, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, and Zoe Saldana – and guess what? I get to kiss all of ‘em.”

SPECULATION: Could 'MACHETE KILLS' End Up A Bond-Style Sci-Fi Actioner?

It's looking like the original plot synopsis for Machete Kills was a total fake. Robert Rodriguez tells Empire the whole thing was a to mislead. In fact he states no cartel leader is even involved a departure from the original film. He went on to say that the film still involves space and they're giving him a bigger playground. I get the impression that a space station/prison or off-world colony could be involved here. Robert fell in love with the idea of Mexicans in space, previously stated that Machete Kills Again would end up in space with babes and lightsabers. Moonraker was mentioned as an inspiration for Machete Kills Again and Bond is mentioned for this film. Could Machete Kills be moving into the science fiction genre early?

“That synopsis we put out is misdirection — it’s all fake. Machete is recruited by the President, that’s true, but there’s no cartel leader and the weapon in space is just one of our early story ideas."

"There is still a space element, for sure. We’ve given the character a much bigger playground. It’s going to be like a James Bond movie, with a Bond-style villain.”

A release date has been given for Sin City 2: A Dame To Kill For which will shoot later this year. However, Machete Kills which begins production soon has a full cast yet zero release date set. The impression I get is that a lot of special effects will be involved, Rodriguez is famous for the sheer volume of in camera effects. So this helps the speculation that this might be more science fiction focused than previously believed.

It could be possible Robert and the gang are putting the big guy into space earlier than expected. The writer/director has always had an obsession with the genre. The Spy Kids franchise has always had multiple sci-fi aspects. Barbarella was going to be Robert's first full-on science fiction film, it had sets and costumes ready to go but the studio pulled the plug at the last minute. Robert was also set for a live-action Jetsons movie which also never came together. One of his dream projects was a Predator sequel which he wrote back in the 90's. Fox would hire him to write and produce Predators which was oddly enough was a solid successful effort with a second installment in the works. Planet Terror was the closet thing we've gotten from Robert which also had sci-fi plot points but was more of remake of the Italian horror film Nightmare City.

The man on a presidential mission theme leads back to Robert's nature for homages. Perhaps this will be a call back to John Carpenter's Escape From New York? Rodriguez has stated when he saw Escape From New York at age 12 he wanted to become a director. It wouldn't be hard to see Machete fighting his way out of a massive prison colony on earth or off-world.

The madame character played by Sofia Vergara gives me thoughts of Paul Verhoeven's Total Recall which had late 80's Mexico City doubling as as futuristic city. Mexico was also the stage location for Mars and the notorious Venusville which was filled with bars/whorehouses.

Second Teaser Poster For 'MACHETE KILLS' Confirms Cast

CAST EM': 'MACHETE KILLS'

The Machete Kills cast is already impressive with Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Jessica Alba, Amber Heard, Mel Gibson, Demian Bichir, Sofia Vergara and Antonio Banderas. The previous installment had monolithic amount of actors involved so I wouldn't be shocked to see Robert Rodriguez gathering more actors for supporting roles and cameos. I have a few actors in mind that could make Kills even more crazy than it already is.

SALMA HAYEK: Hayek's giant break in Hollywood was thanks in-part to Robert's second film Desperado which blew up both their careers in 1995. Antonio Banderas also credits his successful career to the film and will be appearing the film in a small role. I assume that Hayek might also want to contribute to the film which will be mostly set in Mexico this time around. Salma will be seen next in Oliver Stone's Savages oddly enough playing a ruthless female Mexican cartel leader. I could see her playing a fast-talking sex worker alongside Sofia Vergara or even an assassin sent after Machete.

NICOLAS CAGE: If anyone could make a great Madman Mendes it would be Cage. He brings an intensity to his roles so I can only imagine what he could be like with Robert directing him. Willam Dafoe played a Mexican cartel leader in Once Upon A Time In Mexico and pulled it off effortlessly. I could see Nicolas doing the same if he's able to develop a convincing Spanish accent. I'm sure dubbing his Spanish would be needed and with a voice completely different from Cage's could also be used for comedic-effect.

AL PACINO: In Machete, we got Robert De Niro in a extremely funny villainous role. I wouldn't be shocked to see Pacino at least being approached for a cameo. Considering he appeared in the disastrous comedy Jack And Jill, so anything is possible now. Personally I've been dying to see him send himself up in an action comedy like this parodying his roles in Carlito's Way and Scarface. He'd make a great U.S. government suit or competing Mexican cartel leader.

JOHN LEGUIZAMO: This amazing character actor has fallen off the radar lately and needs to come back to live-action features. Leguizmo has extensive amount of genre credits which include roles in Die Hard 2, The Fan, Romeo + Juliet, Collateral Damage, Summer of Sam, Assault on Precint 13, Spun and Land of The Dead. I could picture him as a contract hitman for the cartel. It could be interesting to see him being more of professional killer than we've previously seen the other minons in the last film.

Robert Rodriguez Says 'MACHETE KILLS AGAIN' Is A Space Opera With Space Babes And Lightsabers

From the little we know about Machete Kills, Mel Gibson's character tries to launch a missile from space to cause a global war. This apparently will lead into the third film which for the most part will be set entirely in space. GordonAndTheWhale had confirmation that both Machete Kills and Machete Kills Again had both been greenlit at the same time. Back during Comic-Con last summer Robert Rodriguez revealed to MTV what's in store for Machete Kills Again which will be a science fiction actioner set in space. Of course this won't be next for Robert as he's expected to shoot Sin City 2: A Dame To Kill For as soon as Machete Kills wraps. After Sin City 2, it's Fire And Ice which then Robert will be busy editing and scoring the three films.

"It is a space opera. It does take place in space. Machete has to go into space," Rodriguez confirmed. "It's so absurd but it makes sense. You've got to go somewhere new in a third part — why not go into space? It's going to be so fun. It's played straight. Remember 'Moonraker'? It's going to be like 'Machete' and 'Moonraker'.....You see him in a space shuttle," Rodriguez told us. "The bad guy escapes the planet. 'Part 3' has to take place in space. Space babes, a machete-shaped lightsaber. You gotta have it!"

While Robert's Troublemaker Studios produced Predators along with Planet Terror and the Spy Kids franchise having science fiction elements, he's never made a full-fledged sci-fi movie. Rodriguez had previously tried to make Barbarella and The Jetsons films but both got the ol' axe. He kept hope to jump into the genre even creating his own original sci-fi concept Nerveracker which was his ode to Blade Runner, that also didn't get traction.

Antonio Banderas Will Have A Cameo In 'MACHETE KILLS'

During CinemaCon Spanish actor Antonio Banderas (Desperado, Haywire, Once Upon A Time In Mexico) spoke to MTV about whether or not he'd be joining the cast of Machete Kills. Antonio reveals he'll have a cameo while being coy about the role but he does confirm it won't be the return of El Mariachi. Banderas had a major breakout after starring in Robert Rodriguez's Desperado which lead to iconic roles like Zorro. The rest of the cast includes Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Jessica Alba, Mel Gibson, Amber Heard, Demian Bichir and Sofia Vergara which is starting to make it an action flick to excited for.

"I would love to. If Robert called me for anything, I would do it," he said. "I've done six movies with him, he was at the beginning of my career, so he came to my house and explained to me a little cameo over here as he explains things like a little kid."

"It's a new character," he elaborated, clarifying that he wouldn't be reprising his role as El Mariachi. "But I cannot talk about it because it's a very surprising character. If I do, I will completely jinx it, so I actually prefer [not to]. But it's very interesting. The whole thing is a progressive character during the whole entire movie, but my participation is only in one side of it."

Sofia Vergara Wanted To Play Mexican Madame In 'MACHETE KILLS'

Variety reports that Columbian actress Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) is the latest possible addition to Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills. Sofia could end up playing a leather-clad Madame Desdemona, whose Mexican harlots have info that Machete needs. I think it would be awesome to see Sofia playing a whore-house madame and could give her more exposure for her budding film career. The rest of the cast would include Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Jessica Alba, Mel Gibson, Amber Heard (Pineapple Express, Drive Angry) and Demian Bichir (Savages, A Better Life, Che).

Amber Head In Talks For Femme Fatale Role In 'MACHETE KILLS'

Variety is reporting that Robert Rodriguez has set his eyes on Amber Heard for a femme fatale role in Machete Kills. Amber would play a "manulipative assassin code-named Miss San Antonio" she joins Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Jesscia Alba along with newcomers Mel Gibson and Demian Bichir (Che, Savages, A Better Life). Heard is an Austin, Texas native and has a connection with Rodriguez as she was rumored as a possible replacement (of Rose McGowan) in Robert's axed Red Sonja remake. No word if this part was meant for Michelle Williams or even Lindsay Lohan.
