My Two-Cents On What Fox Needs To Include In THE WOLVERINE Sequel

Originally, there had been chatter from Hugh Jackman that he was looking forward to retiring the character after Days of Future Past. Then The Wolverine was a huge success when compared to the other X-Men releases that time. He also got a chance to see Days of Future Past, which become the biggest box office earner in the franchise. His attitude started changing and we've been hearing him become a bit more open to idea of holding-on the the role. Signing-on for two more installments with X-Men Apocalypse in May 2016 and The Wolverine 2 in March 2017.

He's still giving the impression his participation will be due to what is offered to him, and will have to blow him away for him to agree to it. An excellent creative and contract positioning tactic from Jackman. Production won't likely start for a while and the creatives are still mapping-out the script. It's in a unique position where they might be still willing to take suggestions, well I have a couple and will run them down below.

Fox recently hired screenwriter David James Kelly to help with the script which was being outlined by The Wolverine director James Mangold (3:10 To Yuma, Cop Land), who is set to return. Kelly isn't a stranger to writing Marvel characters, as he was tasked to rewrite the Daredevil reboot for Fox when David Slade (Hard Candy, 30 Days of Night) was still attached as director.

I've tried hard via Twitter to get some details out of James Mangold, but he has been patiently calm and coy when talking about the film. Granted, my exchanges were during the early development of his outline. I'm unsure where he's at with his current collaboration with Kelly. James has actually asked for input and character suggestions, which sort of led me to doing this write-up.

As much as I'd love to see more of the Japanese underworld and the return of Lady Deathstrike, it's possible that might not be the focus of this sequel. Since making the film too close to the last one might not be the wisest move.

Hugh has commented on the fact The Wolverine was a desirable prospect because it was a standalone installment. Only having a few connections to the other X-Men films, feeling like a true solo adventure. It's possible that they reuse that excellent concept for the sequel as well. While most are expecting more of a crossover or bringing-in other main X-Men characters, it's unlikely.

Many cinematic story angles tweaked for the film could see many of the comics influence the film's story. The most suggested story is Mark Millar's Old Man Logan. Something that Jackman himself has said he would be interested in exploring. The biggest problem of making this into a film is that it would almost be impossible to make due to Fox's limited Marvel rights. The comic includes characters like Hawkeye, Red Skull, Hulks, Punisher, Daredevil and many other characters they don't have access to in a post-Apocalyptic wasteland.

It's dark and brutal hard-R content (incest, cannibalism, genocide) is a serious issue since the franchise is mainly PG-13. We know that Marvel and Fox butted-heads over the studio's desire to make Deadpool an R-rated film. Seemingly Fox has agreed to a PG-13 version, which could released as such but given a R-rated cut for DVD/BluRay. Something they did for The Wolverine as the much of the violence was scaled-down for the theatrical release. Although, the comics and video games might conflict with their cinematic mantra. With that in mind, I still don't see Fox or Marvel allowing this dark of a story for a Wolverine sequel.

The biggest issue being a scene where it was revealed Logan was tricked into killing all the X-Men. Something I highly doubt they would want to explore, unless this happens as a Four Horsmen in X-Men Apocalypse. Again, highly doubtful Fox would want to paint Logan in that sort of light.

Basically, why adapt the comic or use it's title if it will be completely unrecognizable from the comic?

I think some of the barebones aspects from the comic could be used. Taking the fact Logan is now extremely old and set in a rugged future without a majority of this mutant cohorts. I think seeing what's it like when that immortally starts to slip away is interesting. A cool part of The Wolverine was when his healing factor was suppressed for a time. Having the setting way in the future could be one of the best elements and actually useable elements from these comics. Also, making it a great candidate for a storyline that is standalone and could be removed from both X-Men timelines. Everything else from the comic? Not so much.

I know everyone freaked-out when a deleted scene from the film revealed his classic yellow costume was a possibility. Wouldn't it be awesome to see Old Man Logan dust off this costume given to him in last solo film and finally give fans the berserker in the yellow costume? I think everyone would rally around seeing Hugh Jackman fighting Omega Red's ass in this awesome version of the classic costume. Seriously, we're in the age of The Avengers/Guardians of The Galaxy and audiences are ready to embrace the "wacky" X-Men costume designs.

Thanks to Days of Future Past the entire timeline of Wolverine has been altered. The events of X-Men trilogy, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and The Wolverine have seemingly been erased (or some aspects of them). Certain things still could have happened, but things like the Weapon X program will have been completely altered. We know that Apocalypse will be set a decade later. This means that Logan will have the chance to have that era of his life rebooted via Singer or Mangold. We know both directors have expressed interest in recreating that aspect of his origin. I'm sure fans would love to see that re-imagined in a new film.

There are so many different versions and avenues for Logan's time in Weapon X. This altered timeline could see his mutant cohorts in that covert team shaken-up slightly. Fox and producers have already stated that Origins isn't canonical to these new X-Men films.

It's not even known if William Styker will even head it up this time around, but since they've established him it's likely he'll be around at some point. Other members in different versions of the covert group include Sabertooth, Deadpool, Lady Deathstrike and Omega Red. The latter I've been suggesting as the main villain of this new film, since a Cold-War era setting could be perfect. Having so many connections with Logan beyond his life with the X-Men, and is a fan-favorite threat similar to Silver Samurai.

Having his Cold-War black ops past coming back to haunt him via the return of Omega Red could be something exploring. He's one of the most viable and dangerous Wolverine villains and we've all been patiently waiting for his screen debut. If Omega can kick the living shit out of Logan in his prime, imagine the kind of threat he could be in his old age. I'd also love to see Wolverine running around Europe and Russia, possibly re-treading other moments from his WWII and black ops past.

I was also under the impression that The Wolverine was hinting to Omega Red with Viper's mutant suppression robots. Their tentacles and ability to drain Logan's powers, seems very similar to Omega's cyborg modifications and turned him into a robotic vampire. Sucking the life force from mutants and humans alike to keep him powerful.

Doubtful this sort of technology was used during Logan's Weapon X days, but testing on a serial killer like Arkady Rossovich who has been imprisoned by Russian government for decades makes some sense. Creating their own super-soldier or weapon x, which might have backfired and kept him in some cryogenics bunker for decades. The similarities between Omega Red and Winter Soldier are there, but let's face it Red was there first in the comics. Differences being that Rossovich was never a good person and is clearly a murdering maniac that enjoys doing it.

 He's been used as a hitman for gangsters before, it's possible he could be sent to kill Wolverine by whoever people in-control of Omega wants him dead. Learning that he and his new target had come to blows in the past could setup flashback scenes to Logan's time in Weapon X. Depending on the angle they want to follow he could be a hired thug that becomes too overpowered to control and threatens everyone in his path. The deranged villain wanting to destroy all the existing enemies of the Soviet era, starting with Logan.

I'm aiming high with this casting choice, but I'd love to see someone like Daniel Craig in the role. Of course Craig is off with the Bond franchise via Spectre. However, his projects between Bond films aren't always the best. I'm sure he could be willing to take a iconic villain role like this, if convinced by Hugh Jackman and James Mangold. You might remember that Daniel and Hugh are friends, thanks in-part to doing a play together. Jackman stepped aside during Bond talks, allowing the lesser known Daniel Craig to take the role. I'm sure Jackman would be able to talk him into doing it.

Plus, I'm unsure how many villain roles he's being offered these days. A shame considering he made an excellent villain in the comic book adaptation of Road To Perdition. I'd also like to point out his underrated Russian-set WWII action drama Defiance where he did a decent job speaking Russian and kicking ass, alongside Liev "Sabertooth" Schreiber (someone we hope also reprises his Origins role) and Fox's new Thing from Fantastic Four played Jamie Bell.

To make this more of standalone film, we would likely need to explore X-Men characters that haven't been given a fair on screen representation. However, they would need to still have that connection to Wolverine.

A cool storyline from the Chris Claremont comics includes a villainous version of Psylocke (Lady Mandarin) sent to assassinate Wolverine. I've been vocal that the series could use more strong female characters and Elizabeth Braddock is complex enough to consider. A former spy, that becomes a badass ninja telepath, member of the X-Men and eventual leader of the contemporary X-Force team. If we don't end-up seeing them rehashing a cool Wolverine centric character like Lady Deathstrike, Braddock would make an excellent female lead.

In the comics Viper worked for the criminal organization The Hand. I assume the group is now back with Marvel via Daredevil rights. However, the group also had Psylocke and Omega Red among their ranks. A different name for the group could be created, maybe run by Russian underworld or corrupt officials. This does seemingly connect both Psylocke and Omega Red to a villain from the previous film, this wouldn't be something fans would consider reaching.

It was rumored Indian singer-actress Priyanka Chopra (Don) was being eyed for the role of a rebooted version of Elizabeth Braddock aka Psylocke in The Wolverine. However, the actress and character seemingly didn't make the final film. There is some hope that the character could appear in Apocalypse, but more likely will be recast for Jeff Wadlow's X-Force. The writer-director talked lineup with ScreenRant and seeming gives the impression she's a candidate. The Psylocke/Wolverine connection could be explored in other future films.

“What X-Force is – the way I talk about X-Force is… X-Men is about mutants, and not all the mutants get into the mansion. So I’m curious to tell a story about the mutants who don’t make it into the mansion… I’m a huge Deadpool fan, who doesn’t love Wolverine – but obviously Cable is an iconic character we haven’t seen onscreen yet. I love Psylocke, Domino is an amazing character – it’s a long list of characters that have appeared in X-Force – Colossus is in the current lineup… There’s a lot of really exciting characters that you can use in X-Force that have been in other movies, that haven’t shown up, or maybe there’s ways to re-imagine them, even though they might’ve shown up in other films.”

I'm not saying casting Chopra should or will happen, but the two female leads in The Wolverine were unknowns to U.S. audiences. Both of them have since landed high-profile DC Comics roles in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Arrow, hiring diverse unknowns paid-off before and it could again.

Domino is another potential female lead that has connections to Wolverine and could be a great character in a post-X-Men story. It's possible she'll also be apart of Deadpool and X-Force films, which might diminish that standalone aspect. Deadpool is about to begin production soon, so we'll know for sure if Fox will add either Psylocke or Domino to that lineup. Since it's unlikely they'll use Copycat as the female lead after those extensive script rewrites.

Fox could also decide to introduce one or both in The Wolverine 2 instead. Holding-off their on screen debuts until then, setting-up the rest of the lineup for X-Force. As there have been rumblings Cable and a version of Archangel might be apart of the cast of X-Men Apocalypse. Slowly introducing the lineup might be a smart idea on the part of Fox and producers, inside of throwing all their origins/character intros into one film spreading it across a couple of them.

Another cool aspect is that both Domino and Psylocke allow a diverse casting search. Considering we've seen Psylocke in the comics portrayed as both an Asian and British woman, and now Indian with these casting rumors. Domino is a blank-slate when it comes to casting since any actress could have makeup applied to play her.

My hope is that The Wolverine 2 could be a precursor to the X-Force film, since we know that future Logan has memories of his original timeline. He could use the knowledge of his soldier status to form the covert team of mutants deemed too unstable for the mansion. Creating a group that could deal with mutant threats that needed deadly force. I just don't see it as only being this giant-setup for X-Force though, as it would mess with the standalone idea. We've seen comic book movies like Iron Man 2 and Amazing Spider-Man 2 fail when only existing to setting-up other films. They lose all purpose, conflict and motivation beyond setups.

I could see them just plant seeds for character setups, that really haven't been given the time of day in previous films that just happen to have connections to Wolverine. This could be the reason why The Wolverine sequel and Deadpool was greenlit before Jeff Wadlow's X-Force. Fox was likely unsure about moving forward with a new X-Men universe team lineup without audiences being aware of them. This could be fixed with the next three movies, which do allow themselves to use those mutants.

How awesome would it be to see an X-Force film set in that X-Men future having Cable/Psylocke leading the team, with dangerous/unbalanced mutant characters among the ranks? Having Old Man Logan originally forming it and possibly showing-up in a couple of scenes as their version of Nick Fury. It's a direction to consider and a reason to keep Jackman around the franchise for a couple more films. Beyond that possible X-Men/Fantastic Four crossover which Fox is apparently cooking-up, but we have no idea if Hugh Jackman will be apart of that.

Ryan Reynolds Indeed Returning To X-MEN Universe For Tim Miller's DEADPOOL And Shoots In March

Deadline reports that Ryan Reynolds is closing a deal to reprise the role of Wade Wilson better known as Deadpool in his own movie. The development on the project has been in the works since the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine back in 2009, but only just got the greenlight in September after extensive rewrites to the script. Blur Studio's Tim Miller (Thor: The Dark World) is still directing the film with a script written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernik (Zombieland). Production is said to begin in March, while the rest of the cast hasn't been announced or rumored.

I assume we'll hear official news coming very soon. Fox is also casting lead roles for Bryan Singer's X-Men: Apocalypse, so it's getting busy at those casting offices. I'll be interesting to see if people linked to Apocalypse roles will also read for Deadpool as well.

SPECULATION: Could Tom Hardy Be Wanted For A Different Role In X-MEN APOCALYPSE?

Hidden in the recent Doctor Strange casting report by TheWrap. Jeff mentions that while Tom Hardy was in the mix to play Strange, he's considering parts in both Suicide Squad and X-Men Apocalypse. It sounds good for Suicide Squad since Hardy's strong working relationship with Warner Bros. Making big blockbuster movies for the studio such as Mad Max Fury Road, Dark Knight Returns and Inception.

It seems that Tom might be looked at for a villain role in the film. The ancient Egyptian mutant villain Apocalypse is the first thought everyone has had, and Jeff hints that's who the role is. While it could be great to see Hardy play another iconic comic book villain, there are other mutants he could be playing.

In my opinion he is better suited for Nathan Summers better known as Cable. Since we've already seen Bishop time-travel it wouldn't be hard to imagine seeing another time-traveller join the franchise. In the comics mutant engineer Forge builds a time-machine (no need for Kitty Pryde's powers) and Bishop is sent back to prevent an assassination. Instead of preventing an assassination, Bishop get's confused and attempts to assassinate Charles Xavier.

We have already been teased this altered timeline might give us an even worse future for mutant and humankind. Could they be hinting to an alternate future timeline of Age of Apocalypse which included Cable travelling back in time? I wouldn't be surprised if Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg decide to use this element, but switch-out Bishop for X-Force leader Cable. Making him a major villain of the film as well.

The studio is aiming to give Cable his own film and it's been somewhat confirmed that he'll be apart of the Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2) scripted X-Force film. Producer Lauren Shuler Donner has already mentioned a desire to give that character his own film in previous interviews. Lauren is pursuing Channing Tatum for the Gambit spin-off, trying to sign Hardy for a Cable/X-Force movie isn't hard to imagine.

Tom Hardy being interested in a role in Suicide Squad, might be echoing a villain-turned-hero take on Cable in Apocalypse. I could also see Hardy in the role after taking-on another hard-nosed apocalyptic character like Mad Max. Nothing says Hardy will choose either role, but it's great time for Hardy to be considering three major roles in massive comic book films.

Bryan Singer Confirmed To Direct Fox's X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

Even after all the sex scandals Bryan Singer Fox has decided that he'll direct the next X-Men film titled X-Men: Apocalypse, according to Deadline. The director has just reached a deal to helm the next installment, which is expected to begin shooting early next year in Montreal. This isn't much of a surprise, as Singer worked closely with producer Simon Kinberg along with screenwriters Michael Doughtery and Dan Harris to flush-out a story for Apocalypse. The two writers also wrote X2, so at least where the script is concerned it's in good hands. It's release date is set for May 27th, 2016.

We'll be seeing young versions of Jean Grey, Cyclops and Storm. These were assumed at the time of the film's announcement. It's nice to see that Mystique won't be the only lady this time around in that timeline. The most interesting addition here is actually Storm, since this will be set in the 1980s. It gives a perfect reason for Singer to use her mohawk character design. Which in my opinion is her coolest look, and is also her current look in the comics as well.

Channing Tatum's Gambit might make his debut, as pointed out by Deadline. Months back Bryan Singer didn't sound as confident about using Gambit, but had originally wanted to use him during the first two X-Men films. I'm sure producers are begging him to find space for Gambit, as they are developing a spin-off for the future. Singer listed Remy by name in a small scene in the second film, so there is obviously a desire to use him. Bryan has also mentioned wanting to include a younger Nightcrawler in the film.

The only things we know about the film, is that Apocalypse will be our main villain. It's setting will be exactly a decade after the events of Days of Future Past, placing it in the 1980s. Having the setting in one single time period, rather than jumping between past and future teams (however, that could change). McAvoy is said to be playing Professor X bald this time, which should make hardcore fans happy.

It's extremely possible would could see the return of time-travelling mutants, but in this case they'll be there to kill/save the life of Charles Xavier. Bishop, who was last seen in Days of Future Past in the comics is sent back in time (with the aid of a time machine built by tech-genius Forge) to stop events from getting worse in the future (Age of Apocalypse?). This leads him to attempt to assassinate Xavier in the past, luckily for the professor another traveler is set-out to save him. That could very well be our introduction to Nathan Summers better known as Cable. Lauren Shuler Donner and others have expressed their interest in bringing that character into the franchise. There were even hints to Cable getting his own film. Apocalypse just might be the film to explain his origin, and be our window into a even worse fate for the world.

James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender and Nicholas Hoult as expected to return. It's crazy to think we'll see two X-Men films released in 2016, with Deadpool in February and Apocalypse in May. We still have James Mangold chipping away at The Wolverine 2 story/script (has a date set for 2017), and we're still waiting to get an update about the fate of Jeff Wadlow's X-Force. There has also been chatter of a Gambit spin-off with Channing Tatum expected to that role. That one project doesn't have any creatives working on currently, so it's the biggest long shot at the moment.

Fans Rejoice, Fox's X-MEN Spin-Off DEADPOOL Officially Coming February 2016!

THR has news that 20th Century Fox has finally greenlit the long in-development Deadpool spin-off. The film set in the X-Men universe has been trying to get pushed into production for years. Problems stemmed from it's R-rating, and a completed script leaked online a while back. The character doesn't really lend itself to a PG-13 rating, as his signature is hyper-violent and filthy mouth. Since then, screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (Zombieland, G.I. Joe: Retaliation) did a bunch of rewrites to the existing script. Fox has officially given the spin-off a release date of February 12th, 2016.

Director Tim Miller's test footage featuring Ryan Reynolds leaked online not too long ago. It's sort of fun, but also a bit average. Perhaps, being all digital might be the main problem people like myself have with it. Ryan played the mercenary's alter-ego Wade Wilson in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and has been loosely attached throughout the entire development. It looks like Ryan is set in the role, and it's ready to go.

Lauren Shuler Donner is set as producer, as she heads-up all the films in the X-Men franchise. The producer has been vocal about trying to make the film with a smaller budget, to keep it's R-rating intact. It's February release could mean that Fox has agreed to this, as the winter months have been known as the dropping season for smaller studio R-rated genre flicks. X-Men: Apocalypse is said to begin shooting this April in Montreal, with a release date only months after Deadpool in May. The impression this gives me is that Deadpool is ready to go into production soon, or it will have less post-production and will be a smaller film.

I'm not sure how much of connection this film will have with the rest of the X-Men universe, considering Deadpool understands he's in a comic book and breaks the fourth-wall all the time. He'll likely end-up directly talking to the audience and making high-volume pop culture references. Two things we really haven't seen in other X-Men films. One of the weirder comic book characters in Marvel's lineup, it'll make for an unique movie.

At a point it was unknown if Fox would actually pursue the film. As five other Marvel projects have come into light since X-Men: Days of Future Past was announced. Another main X-Men film with Apocalypse, sequels to James Mangold's successful The Wolverine and Josh Trank's unreleased Fantastic Four. Other projects without release dates but are in development include Jeff Wadlow's X-Force and another spin-off focusing on Gambit (possibly played by Channing Tatum). This will be the first time Fox will release two X-Men films in one year, so it'll be interesting to see if this becomes a regular thing. As Marvel Studios has proven the demand is clearly there for these comic book movies, and the market can handle two major releases from a studio.

Will The GAMBIT Movie Be The First Time Channing Tatum Plays The Ragin' Cajun?

Although we've heard Bryan Singer admitting his desire to include Gambit in X-Men Days of Future Past and the in-development X-Men Apocalypse, recent quotes from Channing Tatum could mean Singer won't get his wish. While speaking with MTV, Tatum gives the impressive he's looking to play Remy in the standalone Gambit film before any X-Men installments. A great way to bolster his commitment to the character, pushing for the solo feature first.

“We’ve talked about it being a standalone, first, and actually trying to change the ‘hero, superhero movie.’ Because Gambit is not your typical hero. He’s a thief. He walks on the gray. I’m hoping we can change it a little bit, and then ultimately feather into the other ones.”

The events of Days of Future Past has made the future of the present day X-Men unknown, along characters stuck in a timeline gray-area such as Gambit. Singer, Kinberg and Shuler Donner could really go any route they want with the character. However, if they are going to consider Origins a bit of a blueprint, we'll see Remy living a pre-X-Men life in the 1980's. That decade is currently the setting for X-Men Apocalypse and would be a good way to introduce his character. It's sort of a shame that fans might never see Gambit and Rogue play-out their romantic storyline in the films, but you never know with altered timelines and access to time-travel powers/time machines.

It's a given that X-Men producer and writer Simon Kinberg will likely get involved if/when the studio pursues the Gambit film. At the moment a script isn't in place and it's without a director, Tatum hasn't been officially announced by the studio either. Longtime producer Lauren Shuler Donner has been a bit more positive and told press Tatum was indeed playing Gambit. Even hinting the project could work with a lower budget than recent X-Men films. The only question is, will Fox be willing to fit the bill and greenlight it?

This isn't the first X-Men spin-off mentioned and even pitched to Fox, in the last couple of years. Spin-offs like Deadpool and X-Force have existing scripts, but haven't been given the go-ahead. We've seen Fantastic Four 2 and The Wolverine 2/Wolverine 3 get official release dates, without even completed outlines. This must be extremely frustrating to people like Tim Miller and Jeff Wadlow who have been patiently developing their projects for the studio.

SPOILERS: What Could We Expect From X-MEN APOCALYPSE?

It's starting to look like Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg have made one hell of an X-Men film with Days of Future Past. It basically gives the best action sequences in the franchise, along with fixing a lot of the problems caused by X3 and Origins. I'll be going over spoilers from the film to piece-together what we can expect from X-Men Apocalypse. SPOILER WARNINGS!

We know that the film will be mainly set around the First Class characters and that the timeline will be the 1980s (hopefully early in the decade). Another excellent stylistic choice and could be an excuse to use even crazier mutant outfits. Be prepared for costumes even more wild than Quicksilver's. I would personally like to see one or two of the Jim Lee designs (Gambit and Rogue) influence the costume department, but I'm sure some fans would hate that.

It was revealed that mutants such as Angel, Banshee, Emma Frost and Azazel had been killed by Trask. I don't expect to see them brought back anytime soon. Even though I really liked Azazel, they had to get rid of him to make room for Nightcrawler. Emma Frost leaving the franchise also opens the door for The Red Queen and Psylocke to take her place.

It's been confirmed by Singer/Kniberg and even hinted to in the film that Xavier will seek-out young Storm, Jean and Cyclops in the sequel. We've also heard from Singer that he wants to also use Gambit and a young version of Nightcrawler. Producer Lauren Shuler Donner all but confirmed that Channing Tatum would be playing Remy. Writer Simon Kinberg is still trying to figure-out how to include Gambit into the film. While a solo film is a given, a large role in Apocalypse might not happen and it's unknown how much we'll see of him.

A deleted scene alluded to Scarlet Witch being apart of the Maximoff household. They might be holding back to give that character a proper introduction and they do hint Quicksilver is Magneto's son. Another character that almost made it into the film was Cain Marko, the step-brother of Charles who eventually becomes the Juggernaut. It's very possible he'll make an appearance or at least could be referenced in the film.

In the end credits scene from Days of Future Past, we see a young Apocalypse and in the background his villainous group The Four Hosemen. This is obviously during ancient Egypt as you can clearly see how young the villain is in the footage. Gambit, Angel and Wolverine were brainwashed into becoming Horsemen in the comics, it's likely they could take some spots in the lineup. We could also see other familiar mutants become pawns of Apocalypse. It's unknown if we'll see Ben Foster reprise the role of Angel, but considering his connections to Apocalypse I'm sure Singer is considering it.

There is also confirmation that the original cast will be returning again, it's likely it could serve as cameos. Unless they have Forge build them a time-machine which sends them back to the 80s. I have to admit I really liked the new additions of Bishop, Blink, Warpath and Sunspot. If it allowed them to return, than I could handle the untalented batch of original cast members. I actually wouldn't be shocked if they turned out to be present day Horsemen, depending on which era Apocalypse shows-up.

The Age of Apocalypse comics featured Bishop and Cable as major characters, the pair being sent back in time Terminator-style could be amazing. One being sent-back to kill Xavier and the other trying to prevent the assassination. It hasn't been confirmed if they'll bring back the time-travel element. Seeing how they are talking about bringing back old cast members and it will focus on the First Class era in the 80s, they'd have to use it again. Forge does build a working machine in the distant future, so they wouldn't need to use Kitty again. I would assume that preventing the Sentinel program, could have fuelled an even more horrific future.

Even though we visited the 70's, there are a few things that are kind of up-in-the-air concerning Logan/Jimmy. Does he eventually join the Weapon X program and get his adamantium skeleton/claws, or will that storyline just disappear? Mystiuqe disgusted as Stryker rescues Logan from the government at the end of the film. This could mean that the Weapon X program never turned Logan into the black-ops killing machine.

If Singer resurrects that aspect of Logan's life, we could finally get a solid reboot of the badass government special-ops program (unlike what was shown in Origins). Plus, this could lead to the return of Victor Creed aka Sabertooth and possibly Yuriko aka Lady Deathstrike as well. This alternate timeline could also mean that Deathstrike and Sabertooth, might show-up in The Wolverine 2, if the the sequel is set in this altered timeline.

Hugh Jackman's Flip-Flop On Desire To Play WOLVERINE Part Of New Contract Negotiation?

We've been hearing in recent interviews from Hugh Jackman, that he might be ready to hang-up his claws as Wolverine. This would be expected to happen after Wolverine 3 is released in 2017, but nothing had been official. By 2017, Jackman will have played the role nine times. It's not hard to imagine him wanting to move-on and allowing another actors to takeover the iconic comic book role.

Not so fast, during the Australian premiere of Days of Future Past, Jackman had changed his tune. While speaking with IGN on the red carpet, he's apparently now been given new energy from the recent film. Without spoiling the film, believing there is a lot more that can be said with the character.

“At one point, you’re right, I said I was pretty sure [that 'Wolverine 3' would be my last outing in the role]. But I’m less sure as it goes along. Because after seeing this movie, the whole thing feels fresher to me than ever. And during this movie…I don’t want to spoil anything, but it’s kind of like a clean slate, so who knows where it’s going to go. As long as I have the passion for it and the fans will have me.”

I have to agree there is plenty more left to be said concerning the stories of Wolverine. Considering we're now dealing with an alternate X-Men universe. Fox could perhaps reboot Logan's time with the Weapon X program, including his history going up-again Omega Red during the Cold-War. Even introducing Canada's own mutant team Alpha Flight, which Wolverine was a member of is now a viable option. Other interesting Wolverine stories include Horsemen of The Apocalypse, which might be influencing X-Men: Apocalypse. Jackman has mentioned an interest in the Old Man Logan story, that might be lip-service as it would be a difficult adaptation. Although, combing Old Man with elements of Mark Millar's Enemy of The State could work. Now that Wolverine's new legacy is open to new stories, anything can happen. Because of this, Wolverine 3 might not even become a direct sequel to The Wolverine. I wouldn't rule-out Logan being apart of the main lineup of Jeff Wadlow's X-Force.

This could all be a contract negotiation tactic, spearheaded by Jackman. There had been rumors (via TheNationalEnquirer) that Fox was considering re-signing Hugh for at least four more movies. This new deal would have likely included Wolverine 3, X-Men: Apocalypse and two unnamed films (X-Force being another?). The price-tag was estimated to be around $100 million. Hugh went on to deny the rumblings and gave a EW statement on why he wouldn't consider something like a multi-picture contract.

"No it’s not true. I would never do that. I’ve never done that mainly because, for the fans and for me, each time I’ve gone around there’s been a really good reason to do it and I don’t know what that reason is from here. I’m in the middle of making this and I just promoted the other and I’m really happy with the way The Wolverine came out."

I have to assume that Jackman truly doesn't want to be involved with multi-picture contracts, and you can't blame him. Everyone involved with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, have basically tried to forget it even happened. Producer Lauren Shuler Donner, has said as much when it comes to Origins and X3. It's possible if Jackman isn't allowed a say in future films development, it could end-up becoming another disaster.

A play-or-pay type of deal is likely what Hugh is actually looking for. Giving him the ability to agree to a project before there is an obligation to appear in it. At this point in Hugh's career and role within the X-Men franchise, it's not crazy to think he'd get more of say of the direction of the film's he's involved with. Perhaps, he also wants his responsibilities as producer increased as well. Of course, this is all speculation on my part, but it's doubtful Fox actually wants to let him go.

His new attitude towards the character, might be a hint that's found common ground with the studio concerning future films. It's also very possible that Fox has asked Jackman to be a bit more positive when speaking about his future in the franchise. He does have another two films to make, I'm not exactly sure how he signed-off on those movies without finished scripts.

Channing Tatum Confirmed For GAMBIT Role, Should We Expect To See Him In X-MEN APOCALYPSE?

On the red carpet for the premiere of X-Men Days of Future Past, producer Lauren Shuler Donner confirmed to TotalFilm, that Channing Tatum (Jupiter Ascending, 22 Jump Street) has been cast as the new Gambit. His actually participation in the X-Men universe hasn't been revealed, but Bryan Singer mentioned the character for X-Men Apocalypse. A solo movie featuring Remy has been in development since X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and it seems like the studio might have a viable actor to finally head-up the franchise.



Fans of Taylor Kitsch might be disappointed but shouldn't be shocked. Kitsch post-Origins led two of the biggest box office disappointments in the last decade with Battleship and John Carter. Not exactly the type of actor wanted for a budding comic book franchise.

Hugh Jackman Ending Solo Films After WOLVERINE 3 Or Done With Logan Entirely?

A new interview with SFX gives the impression that Hugh Jackman might be ready to step-aside as Wolverine, to allow another actor take the role after The Wolverine 3. We've heard actors talk like this before, when they are in contract talks with studios for pay bumps. I'm not entirely sure Jackman is done with the character, but I get the impression he the solo films demand a lot more from him (including time) than the X-Men movies. On the other hand, it might be time to move along, we know these films take-up a lot of his time, and we know that Jackman has been pursuing awards caliber roles.

I don’t know yet. We’re talking it through. I still am very ambitious for the character. And tonally I feel like we corrected the ship with the last one. But I feel we can still go further, in a way. If I did another one I’m 99.9% sure it would be the last, so that will inform what it is for me.


The third film hasn't locked-down a story, as you can clearly take from Hugh's comments concerning which comic stories should be used for it. He mentions the iconic Old Man Logan comics from Mark Millar, an interesting suggestion for sure. Director James Mangold is currently flushing-out the story, as he's also a respected screenplay writer. Penning films such as Cop Land and Walk The Line. I personally see there being way too many problems with the Old Man Logan comics to be adapted into a PG-13 film (which all the X-Men/Wolverine films have been rated).

Well, of course we’re looking at Old Man Logan, because that may be the only option left at this point! [laughs] We are looking at a lot of different storylines. No one has jumped out. You can tell from my answer that we’re still working it out. I’m working with Jim Mangold, which is exciting. Jim came on board The Wolverine after Darren [Aronofsky] left, so he inherited it. And of all the things that Jim can do, one of the great things he does is develop scripts. I’m excited to see what we can come up with, but I haven’t signed on signed on. I’m genuinely at that point where unless it’s better than the last one I’m not going to do it.


If the script is as good? Hm. I don’t know if that will get me across the line, man. I think it has to be better. I can still see where we can improve on the last one. I love the intimacy of that story, I liked the small stuff, I liked that it was a little unexpected. I don’t want to get into specifics, because it just upsets people, but there are certain parts of that story where I felt we were predictable. And I don’t think you need to do that with Wolverine. What’s exciting is that you can make it a more interior story, and people actually prefer that. And that was good to show and convince everyone – especially everyone who greenlights the movies!

The major problem with Old Man Logan is basically all of the characters (incestuous Hulks, She-Hulk, Hawkeye, Daredevil, Punisher, Venom, Black Bolt, Kingpin, Abomination, Red Skull, along with hints to other Marvel heroes) in it, aren't allowed to be used by Fox for their movies. Characters such as Dr. Doom, Magneto and Emma Frost, being involved would sort of defeat the purpose of a solo movie. It's also revealed he's slaughtered the X-Men team, thinking they were his enemies (Omega Red..ect). I'm not sure Fox will paint their heroic character as a tragic mass murderer, killing young children and the rest of the X-Men.

They'd have to make a massive amount changes to story to fit the grounded cinematic noir world setup in The Wolverine. I'm sure the character design, the fact he's aged significantly and it's futuristic wasteland setting might be the only elements taken from the comic, if anything at all. The untitled Wolverine 3 is set for a release date of March 3rd, 2017.

SPECULATION: X-MEN Will Be The Mid-Credits Scene In SPIDEY 2, Could Fox/Sony Team-Up In 2018?

It's been confirmed that both UK and US showings of Amazing Spider-Man 2 will feature a mid-credits trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past. The footage in question is straight from the film and not a crossover by any means. However, this might be the beginning of something bigger. It means that Fox and Sony understand the power of cross-promotion, concerning their Marvel characters. If anything, it's proving a bit of goodwill between the two studios. This isn't a giant leap towards Spidey showing-up in Wolverine 3, or Wolverine in Amazing Spider-Man 3, but could lead to the studios actually working something out for future. We know that X-Men producers Hugh Jackman and Lauren Shuler Donner have been talking-up the idea of joining the franchises.



Marvel's Kevin Feige has downplayed the idea and said they had zero plans of doing this. Giving the impression Disney and Marvel don't want anything to do with making this happen. Combining the characters would give more creditability to the other studios, and in the end disprove Feige's entire idea that Marvel can be successful with their own roster. It's true, Marvel Studios has been spending a lot of time and money developing their brand and film universe. Sharing it with Fox and Sony is likely never going to happen, when they have Disney protecting their interests and actively trying to retrieve the film rights.


Splitting a budget/profits of a massive film three-ways could be a legal nightmare, even more so when on of the three parties is actively trying to regain the rights entirely. My thought is that we might have chances of seeing Fox and Sony working together connecting their Marvel universe than every seeing Marvel Studios warming-up to the idea. The key factor here is producer Avi Arad, who's worked on  X-Men, Fantastic Four (still credited and involved) and Spider-Man franchises. Sony and Fox are watching the crazy amount of success that Marvel has been making post-Avengers, and I'm sure they are frustrated as hell. The new Spider-Man movies might be earning the most money, but they are catching a lot of criticism from fans/film critics alike, putting together an event film could really boost all three franchises.

We recently learned that Sony is planning on delaying The Amazing Spider-Man 4, which was eyeing a May 4th, 2018 release date. This slot apparently could go to one of the two spin-offs, which means there is only one major Spider-Man release officially. Oddly enough, this is the same summer that Fox planned an unnamed Marvel release for July 13th, 2018. At this point the X-Men: First Class /Wolverine/Amazing Spider-Man trilogies will be completed and Fantastic Four 2 will have already been released. It would be perfect timing to release a massive team-up, as it's also the same year projected for the release of Avengers 3.

The two studios are already gearing-up for a massive amount of X-Men (Gambit, Magneto, Deadpool, X-Force, Mystique) and Spidey (Sinister Six, Venom, Black Cat?) spin-offs, which are all in different development stages (some only mentioned in passing). If Marvel isn't willing to play-ball, it's possible we could see the two studios split costs and make it happen on their own. Avi has the ear of both Fox and Sony at this point, along with a previous working relationship with X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner. I'm sure he's hatched some sort of pitch of Spider-Man characters and Fantastic Four teaming-up with the X-Men. Even though, Matthew Tolmach and Avid Arad have actually dismissed any plans to join The Avengers. Their comments are concerning working with Marvel Studios, but not Fox, as Avi is still producing with for the new Fantastic Four movies.



In the era of Avengers and Batman Vs Superman/Justice League, the next step in superhero franchises is the event team-up. While people have already assumed Fantastic Four/X-Men team-up is down the line, adding Spider-Man to that lineup could put it on equal footing to the other big films. It's hard to believe we'll ever see a united Marvel universe, but this could be as close as we'll ever get. These studios are also in the business of making money, and if they're able to get a billion dollar film out of combining characters, they'll at least consider making deals with each other.

Channing Tatum Confirms Meeting With Lauren Shuler Donner About GAMBIT Role

MTV caught up with 22 Jump Street star Channing Tatum, and asked him about his desire to take-on the role of Gambit in future X-Men films. Tatum confirms meeting with franchise producer Lauren Shuler Donner about the part. Lauren has already praised Channing in interviews, and even went as far as to mention Gambit getting his own movies. The status of a spin-off is way down the line, but Bryan Singer has mentioned he could include the character in X-Men: Apocalypse. I wouldn't be overly shocked if Tatum ends up joining that cast, as it sounds like both sides are very interested.

“I met with Lauren Schuler Donner. I would love—Gambit’s my really only X-Men that I’ve ever loved. I [mean] I’ve loved them all, they’re all great, [but] I don’t know I guess just being from down south—my dad’s from Louisiana and I’m from Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida—I don’t know I just related to him. He’s just kind of a suave; he’s the most un-X-Men X-Man who’s ever been in X-Men, other than maybe Wolverine. He’s kind of like the anti-hero; he’s a thief. He’s not even like a hero, he’s kind of walking the line of grey. He loves women and drinking and smoking, he’s just a cool guy that happens to have a good moral center.” 

“I hope it does [come together]. You never know, it’s a weird industry. If the stars align, I would play it. I’m already working on the accent.”

Michael Fassbender Game For MAGNETO Movie, Acknowledges David Goyer's Old Script

Once upon a time, there was a Magneto origin film being developed at Fox. They asked David S. Goyer (Blade, Batman Begins, Man of Steel, Batman Vs Superman) to write a script for the spin-off and was loosely attached to direct. The film would start-off during the Holocaust and eventually see Magneto hunting down Nazis. This was eventually given the axe, and the script was shelved with elements being used in X-Men: First Class. At the time the studio was afraid the tone in Goyer's script was too dark for an X-Men film.

While speaking with Yahoo!, Michael Fassbender mentioned a desire to get his own movie as Magneto. Stating it "will happen" and "should happen". He went as far as to acknowledge the Goyer script. Considering "talk" of Gambit and Mystique movies, it's not hard to imagine Fox resurrecting the old Magneto solo flick.

“I would be interested [in a Magneto spin-off] sure,” says the Irishman, “Apparently there was a script floating around, but I haven’t read it."

Last we heard from Goyer concerning Magneto was back in 2009, he still seemed positive about the project getting made. Even though, First Class was being fast-tracked at the time.

Talk Of A MYSTIQUE Movie Returns, This Time With Jennifer Lawrence As Lead

Most people don't remember this, but around the time of the production for X-Men Origins: The Wolverine there was talk of more spin-offs. Characters like Magneto and Mystique were posed to get their own origin films as well. David S. Goyer was hired to write and possibly direct a Magento film, that wasn't to be. The elements of that film were used in Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class, possibly a similar fate for Mystique's origin as well.

The Mystique film hadn't been fully realized by the studio at the time, but Rebecca Romijn was still attached for the role. Later on, the studio developed First Class and Jennifer Lawrence was cast as a young Raven. This might have been the best thing for the character, as we got to see her develop as a fully functioning female lead. We've seen Mystique go from villain side-kick, to become the largest standout female character currently in the franchise. Standing alongside Magneto and Xavier in First Class, and now with Wolverine in Days of Future Past.

A third Wolverine (March 3rd, 2017) spin-off is in the works and producer Lauren Shuler Donner has previously mentioned a desire to pursue Deadpool and Gambit solo films. While speaking with EW she does briefly hint to the potential of developing a Mystique film again.

“There was a regime [at the studio] that didn’t see the worth in [spin-offs], and the current people who run Fox understand, embrace it, and we’re going to do right by it,” says producer Lauren Shuler Donner, who’s produced all of the X-Men films. “I’d like to do Gambit. I’d like to do Deadpool. We’ll see. There’s a lot of really great characters.”

With shapeshifter Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) taking a pivotal role in Past‘s plot, Donner says she’d be interested in taking that character into a solo film.

Producer and screenwriter Simon Kinberg, who is currently building the new X-Men universe with Bryan Singer also sees the value of a Mystique movie.

“I love what Jen Lawrence has done with her, and I feel like because she is in such a crowded ensemble, there’s so much more opportunity if you were to follow her solo.”

This makes a lot of sense, as Oscar winning actress Jennifer Lawrence is already the face of a massively successful billion dollar franchise, with Hunger Games (earning $1.5 billion in just two installments and two more on the way). While none of the X-Men films have been able to break $500 million worldwide, both of Lawrence's films have (Games earning $691M and Catching Fire raking-in $864M). She has the talent, following and box office numbers to support her own comic book franchise.

Jennifer is also expected to return for a role in X-Men: Apocalypse, which is could begin production sometime in 2015. Fox has also announced a release date for an untitled Fox/Marvel film in 2018. A lot of people suspect this could be X-Men/Fantastic Four Crossover, Gambit, Deadpool, X-Force or even Silver Surfer, but it's now possible that it might end-up Mystique as well.

Juggernaut Was Set For DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, Will He Appear In X-MEN APOCALYPSE Instead?

One of the more interesting elements of Bryan Singer's inclusion of a Vietnam sub-plot in X-Men: Days of Future Past, is the exclusion of Cain Marko (Juggernaut). The X-Men villain along with his younger step-brother Charles Xavier (Cain would bully Charles while growing-up) fought in the Korean War (originally in the comics), which could have been substituted with Vietnam. An easy way in for Marko, and sort of an interesting way to include his origins teasing mutants could be created as well. Sinister and Juggernaut are mutants of sorts, but were originally humans turned-into mutant villains. Even Spider-Man is considered a mutant, even though he wasn't born with his mutated DNA.

Finding an accident jewel during the war, it bestows upon him the Juggernaut powers, as Marko isn't actually a mutant. The jewel could be technology linked to a group of the first mutants, like Apocalypse as he's able to give humans mutant abilities. Sinister being a prime example of that, turning the human doctor into one of the most powerful mutant villains. I understood why Fox made Raven his adopted sister, rather than including Marko as Charles' step-brother. However, it would have been easy to include him as one of the military characters, instead of a less popular character like Toad.


We now have confirmation that indeed Cain was intended to be in the film, but was later replaced with Quicksilver (alluded to by producer/screenwriter Simon Kinberg). Aussie actor Josh Helman (The Pacific) reveals he was originally hired to play Marko in the film (bulking-up for the role), but would later be asked to play a young William Stryker instead. The Juggernaut part was eventually cut, due to overcrowding and was expected to play a part similar to Quicksilver.

“I originally got hired on a different role, which is no longer in the script -- it was going to be young Juggernaut,” Helman explained when IGN visited the set of the film. “So I was like, ‘Oh, s#!t. I’ve got to put on like 30 pounds!’ So I was training for like four weeks, and then I got a phone call saying, ‘Good news and bad news. Bad news first: Juggernaut’s no longer in the script. Good news: They’re having trouble with another role and they want to see you for it.’”

We've already heard from Bryan Singer he wants to add characters like Gambit and Nightcrawler in the sequel. Since he wanted include Nightcrawler, but the film was already overcrowded and we know that Singer has been dying to use Gambit since X2. I expect Juggernaut is another one of those characters as Bryan had the intention to use him in Days of Future Past and even back during the early development of X3 (before he exited the film). I wouldn't doubt if he was included, he'd start-out standing alongside Apocalypse.

Marko entering the cave and finding more than the jewel in the cave, could make for interesting end-credits scene for Days of Future Past. I'm just not sure Singer would have the foresight for something like that though. As he's been making massive deviations to the comic lore already, sticking to his guns is admirable and a bit absurd at times. Making drastic changes to Trask from X3, making Stryker incredibly younger than he was during the same time period in X-Men Origins. Singer could push even further and recreate the origins for a bunch of previously used characters, like Nightcrawler, Gambit and even Juggernaut.

Gambit And Nightcrawler Teased For 80s-Set X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, Will Channing Tatum Play Gambit?

While speaking to CinePremiere (via ScreenRant) Singer confirmed X-Men: Apocalypse would be set sometime in the 1980's, which is a little further into the future than we were expecting. The reasoning behind it is that Bryan wants to include characters like Gambit and Nightcrawler (we assume others such as Cyclops, Jean and Storm would also be on the table as showing-up). The pair of X-Men would be around in that timeline, which would make them somewhere in their mid-late 20s or early 30s (if Nightcrawler was born in the 60's). Depending on how Singer approaches Nightcrawler in the end, as the film's script is still being developed/written.

“I’m considering a Gambit and potentially a young Nightcrawler for Apocalypse. [We were] going to have to Nightcrawler [in Days of Future Past] and even wrote a scene, but I felt that we were forcing too mutants known history.”

Louisiana actor Channing Tatum (21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street, This Is The End, White House Down, Magic Mike 1-2, Haywire, Jupiter Ascending, Foxcatcher, Lego Movie) has already been campaigning for the Gambit role (via SlashFilm), and Lauren Shuler Donner has gone as far to hint new talk of a Gambit movie. She even seemed excited on the prospective of Channing in the role. His film Foxcatcher is expected to gather a lot of awards talk, which could ease fans apprehension of casting him in the role.

“I would like to play Gambit. Gambit’s my favorite. I’m from New Orleans, around that area. My dad’s from New Orleans, and I like to do a Cajun accent. I could do it for real. No knock on Taylor Kitsch [who played the character in 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine'], though, ’cause I actually like his Gambit, but I’ve always lived around Cajun people. [...] Gambit was always like the woman-loving, cigarette-smoking, drinking [guy]. He was the punk rock of all the superheroes. He’s a thief. He kind of rode the line.”

At one point the X-Men franchise producer was actively considering a Gambit film, but after the poor reception of Origins, that talk quickly slowed down. I assume even more so when Taylor Kitsch, ended up leading two massive box office bombs (John Carter and Battleship), the negative stigma that actor brings to the table might be the reason they never brought him back. Along with Matthew Vaughn/Bryan Singer's timeline update clean-up via First Class and Days of Future Past. Lauren's recent quotes to Empire give the impressive the studio could consider Channing's offer, which could lead to a spin-off feature. We already know that a mystery Marvel film is set for release in 2018 (July 13th) at Fox, it's possible the Gambit film could be the mystery project. Given that X-Force will likely happen before 2018, Jeff Wadlow's script has a completed draft.

"I'm dying to do a Gambit movie with Channing Tatum," Shuler Donner reveals. "That doesn't have to be a great big movie. It's a thief in New Orleans, it's a whole different story. He's on board, and I have to get the studio on board. How can anyone resist Channing? He's such a sweetheart."

While we sort of have an idea of where Fox might go with casting with Gambit, but they haven't really mentioned names for Nightcrawler. It's safe to say they'll be recasting Alan Cummings for the role. Since the teleporting offspring of Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) would be a lot younger than he was in the 2002 film.

I know that Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson (Harry Potter, Dredd, Never Let Me Go, True Grit, Frank, Ex Machina, Unbroken, Anna Karenina) has been mentioned for a role (possibly Dr. Doom) in Fox's Fantastic Four, but if that doesn't pan-out he'd make a solid Nightcrawler. It doesn't hurt he just worked with Michael Fassbender (Magneto) in the punk-rock comedy Frank. That film, and Angelina Jolie's WWII bio-pic Unbroken are expected to be major award contenders in 2014-2015. We haven't really seen Fox make the attempt to cast awards caliber actors for actual X-Men.

Another solid actor in my opinion would be Ben Wishaw (Cloud Atlas, Skyfall, Bond 24, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, Layer Cake, The Hour).

If Singer ends up going young for the role (a bit risky to the tone of the film), which makes sense since Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique is the character's mother. Game of Thrones actor Isaac Hempstead-Wright might be a good fit. He's been growing like a weed lately, by the time production comes-together he might be towering over the rest of the cast. My biggest problem with adding a teen into the lineup would lose the edge that has been established with Days of Future Past. Having characters that can be thrown into the fray without hesitation, might be a better move. At least until something like New Mutants comes around.
