SPECULATION: Joss Whedon Teasing Katee Sackhoff For Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Today, we saw a giant shake-up within the comic world of Marvel. We'll see an unnamed female character with connections to Thor, become the new Thor and picking-up his hammer (along with all of this powers). While some of the more moronic sides of fandom decided to spit their venom at this prospect, others rejoiced.

One of the people to send a message of support for this change-up was Avengers brain-child Joss Whedon. Who posted a message on twitter, which included an image of Battlestar Galactica's Starbuck played by Katee Sackhoff. The actress was the highlight of the series, even though the gender of her character was changed from the original. This could be just a quip on the part of Whedon to rally support for the progressive move by Marvel. Pointing-out an extremely successful gender-swap character from a beloved series.

Another idea, is that Joss could also be teasing to fans Katee's involvement in the MCU after-all. The actress confirmed months back to the SchmoesKnow podcast, she was having a meeting with Marvel Studios for future projects. A lot of people jumped on the idea (including myself), that Katee is a perfect casting candidate for Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel/Ms Marvel. A character that is heavily rumored to be apart of Whedon's Avengers: Age of Ultron.

We also know that Whedon has a thing for hiring television actresses for supporting roles in the franchise, just look at Cobie Smulders landing the Maria Hill role in the original. Placing Sackhoff in any sort of supporting role big or small, would be massive for the actress. Two of her Riddick co-stars (Vin Diesel and Dave Bautista) have already landed lead roles in next month's Guardians of The Galaxy, so piecing together these connections isn't off-base.

She could also be in the running for another role entirely. We have no idea what characters will show-up in the untitled Thor 3. There could be a direct link between this new Thor and what's to come with the next installment. I wouldn't doubt that this character makes a presence within the MCU sometime in the future. We've seen Joss get involved with the casting of Guardians, helping land Josh Brolin recently for the Thanos role.

I have my sneaking suspicions that this character could be in-fact be Angela, who has crossed-paths with The Guardians of The Galaxy and was revealed to be the sister of Loki/Thor in Original Sins. Who better to take-up the mantle of Thor, than his own sister? Marvel went out of their way to acquire this character from it's original series Spawn, which is odd as the company isn't in the business of buying other companies' characters. This character could very well help bridge the Avengers and Guardians, in a similar way Planet Hulk could. Plus, it wouldn't hurt to see more superheroines making their marks in the different franchises.

TRANSCENDENCE & PROMETHEUS 2 Writer Jack Paglen Hired To Pen BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Movie

Variety reports that Universal Pictures is still trying to put together a new feature film based on Battlestar Galactica. For the longest time Bryan Singer (Usual Suspect, X-Men Days of Future Past) was trying to make the project. There is a new update, as Jack Paglen (Transcendence, Prometheus 2) has been hired to writer the script. The new film is said not to be connected to recent SyFy series.

RUMOR: Ms Marvel Next Addition To AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON?

We've been getting a bunch of new additions to the cast of Avengers: Age of Ultron, which include James Spader (Ultron), Aaron Johnson (Quicksilver), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Thomas Kretschmann (Baron Wolfgang von Strucker) and Paul Bettany (The Vision). LatinoReview says that there is one more character to be added to the movie, and it's one that's been long rumored for the sequel. Ms Marvel or whatever they end up calling her, is apparently the next character that will be cast in the film.

Finally, we could get a superpowered female character among the main cast, something lacking in the MCU. One of the trades reported a while back, that Marvel is developing a Ms Marvel script, which could mean they intend the character to have her own franchise in the future.

There have been a couple of actresses linked for the role over the last year or so, they include Emily Blunt (Looper, Edge of Tomorrow), Ruth Wilson (Saving Mr. Banks, Luther, Lone Ranger) and Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica, Riddick). Katee hinted to a meeting with Marvel a while back, which may or may not be for Age of Ultron. She went on to tell SchmoesKnow her thoughts on Marvel's female characters. I would like to think if Katee was offered Age of Ultron, she would take it over the horrible sounding ExpendaBelles. We've seen Katee's Riddick co-stars Vin Diesel and Dave Bautista land major roles in Guardians of The Galaxy, it's possible Marvel casting really digs the movie. 

“There’s obviously a drumbeat that is banging louder and louder that we want a female lead superhero,” he says. ”… [W]e have strong female characters in our films from Black Widow to Pepper Potts to Peggy Carter and you never know. Maybe there’s an offshoot film with one of them. Or Captain Marvel, you know?”

"It's hard," he says. "because we have a small group at Marvel. We do two films a year. To get those two films done and to do them right takes a lot of work and manpower. And female-power, obviously. To add a third film and to just put it in the slate right now is difficult. We have these next three, four, five films coming out and that's what we're really concentrating on."

Katee Sackhoff Downplays Marvel Talk But Would Love To Play Carol Danvers

CraveOnline was able to get clarification from actress Katee Sackhoff about her recent revelation that she was in early talks with Marvel for a project. She confirms her people have but hasn't had direct conversations with Marvel. Further mentioning that she wouldn't mind playing Carol Danvers if offered.

"I absolutely have not spoken to Marvel. It doesn’t mean that my team hasn’t spoken to Marvel. I personally have not spoken to Marvel and have no plans to do a movie in the immediate future, because number one I’m tied up with Somnia which is a fantastic place to be. It’s exactly where I wanted to be."

"Yeah, I’m sure if we dug deep enough there is a sect of fans that don’t want me for Ms. Marvel so let’s just leave it at they want me for Ms. Marvel and that’d be fantastic. I would love to do the role. Of course I would love to do the role. I think that it’s in my wheelhouse and I would enjoy it. I’d be stupid to turn down a Marvel movie but as far as I know, Ms. Marvel isn’t even in the next movie."

SPECULATION: Katee Sackhoff Meeting With Marvel For Role In AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON?

SchmoesKnowPodcast (via CBM) talked with former co-host and actress Katee Sackhoff. She dished to the podcast that she met with Marvel for possible "availability for the first quarter of next year". This being the time frame for the pre-production and shoot of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Katee doesn't reveal the role but it's been suggested by others it could be Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. However, nothing is linking her for any character at this point. She would be the third actor cast by Marvel from the film Riddick, with Dave Bautista as Drax and Vin Diesel playing Groot (actor confirmed) in Guardians of The Galaxy.

Sackhoff has been aiming for her own franchise and taking whatever cool film roles are offered to her. She recently played a bounty hunter in Riddick and will be apart of the Female Expendables film alongside Gina Carano. Her previous experience as a pilot and general badass in Battlestar Galactica could make her a fan favorite to play Danvers. Marvel producer/director Louis D’Esposito (Agent Carter) hints to ComingSoon a Captain Marvel film could happen but said the current slate of projects could be an issue. THR confirmed that Marvel is working on a script for what is being called "Captain Marvel" by Loius. That being said, this role sounds like it's going to be for Avengers: Age of Ultron. If Danvers did show up in Age of Ultron, I expect it'll be as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and won't have her Kree powers.

Could Bryan Singer Direct STAR TREK 3 And Beyond?

IGN talked to Trekkie director Bryan Singer about possibly taking over the Star Trek franchise from J.J. Abrams. Singer unlike Abrams is a die hard Trek fan and even had a small cameo in Star Trek: Nemesis which had a young Tom Hardy as the villain. If Bad Robot and Paramount were looking to hire someone on the level of Abrams but had more of connection with the fans it very well could be Singer. He admits the problems with coming into a franchise as an outsider. Bryan keeps the door open if there is a strong script/story, Abrams stayed on as a producer and supported him. Singer also talks about being friendly with the cast and even visiting the set recently.

"I don't know." "Even though Matthew Vaughn directed X-Men: First Class, I produced it, I wrote the story, I was involved in the casting and the design of the movie itself, so I don't feel like I'm taking on someone else's franchise." "I'm jumping back into my own." "Particularly with this movie (X-Men: Days of Future Past), because it involves the old cast as well." "It's a very different thing jumping into someone else's franchise, someone else's cast." "It was very tough when Brett Ratner did it with mine, you know." "And you're held up, particularly if it's something that people really like what the originator did, you're held to a very, very tough standard when you're jumping into somebody else's franchise." "Right because that was a very different thing." "Alien was a science-fiction masterpiece horror film that Ridley Scott made and Jim Cameron just did an action film." "That being said, if someone presented a story and a structure and the original director was supporting you, really supporting you and producing with you and behind you then maybe it would be a great experience." 

While it's still possible Abrams could still make one more Trek film. Even after he completes a trilogy he'll likely move on. Nothing is set in stone about Star Wars because currently J.J. is only attached to make one film. Along with rumors of him staying on to consult on the other films with Bad Robot sticking around as well. LucasFilm could end up hiring other directors to round out the new trilogy. There has been talk of Alfonso Cuarón being looked at to direct one of the Star Wars sequels.

Singer is dying to make a science fiction film and was putting together a Battlestar Galactica movie with Universal. The last time he mentioned his BSG film was back in August. I could see him put that on hold if given the chance to make a Trek film. Producer Bryan Burk has stated that the studio isn't looking for another four year gap between the release of Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek 3. X-Men Days of Future Past is coming out in 2014 which would give Bryan plenty of time to shoot Trek 3 for a possible 2016 release date.

John Orloff To Write Bryan Singer's Battlestar Galactica

Deadline reports that Jeff Orloff is closing a deal to write the script for Bryan Singer's Battlestar Galactica based on the 70's movie and TV series. Singer recently noted that Battlestar would be his next film after he's done with Jack The Giant Killer. Orloff doesn't have a history with large films but wrote episodes for Band Of Brothers, Zack Snyder's Legend of The Guardians and Anonymous. It will be interesting which take they'll go with and I'm dying to see Singer jump into a full force science fiction action film. I'm also curious to see if they'll be taking inspiration from the recent reboot series.

Battlestar Galactica Next For Bryan Singer?

SFX (via ThePlaylist) spoke to Bryan Singer who is currently in post-production with Jack The Giant Killer for Warner Bros. which I'm dying to see a trailer for. Singer confirmed again that his Excalibur remake setup at Warner Bros. has indeed been axed. This might be a good thing for fans of cylons as Singer is now focusing on his Battlestar Galactica film for Universal. This gives further fuel that Singer won't be directing X4 or New Mutants anytime soon for Fox.

“Yeah, unfortunately [‘Exalibur’] is no longer going to happen,” Singer said. “I was really enthused to do it. I’m a fan of John Boorman’s movie and it was my intention to get it going after ‘Jack The Giant Killer’ was completed. The project was with Warner Bros and what happened is that another King Arthur project was brought to them during that time. Basically, it was just more ready to go into production than ours was. That is why our version of ‘Excalibur’ ended up being negated. But, when that happened, it allowed me to go straight into developing ‘Battlestar Galactica’ – which I think will be really exciting.”
