THR reports that screenwriter David S. Goyer will be returning to the world of directing with new version of The Count of Monte Cristo. The project comes from Constantin Films and Impact films best known for their Resident Evil franchise. However, the producers have been branching out with period adventure films such as The Three Musketeers and the upcoming disaster project Pompeii. David currently doesn't have writing duites on the project as Michael Robert Johnson (Pompeii) has adapted the screenplay.
Goyer has had a very solid upswing in his career lately developing stories for Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, getting the ball rolling on Legendary's Godzilla reboot and apparently a solid effort with Man of Steel. Warner Bros. is rumored to have already hired Goyer to begin work on a Superman sequel to Steel and even rumbling of possible screenwriting gig on Justice League. It will be interesting to see if Goyer has learned new tricks as a filmmaker since his previous outings Blade Trinity and The Unborn didn't connect with audiences. To be clear this is the studio behind The Resident Evil franchise, so they could be looking for mindless 3D action over substance.
