Flash (TBA)

While Warner Bros. is fast tracking Green Lantern, Batman 3 and Superman 2. Other classic DC characters are getting their own movies. WB has learned from the Dark Knight to develop the characters giving each their own strong solo feature. The Flash is the most recent project to get a writer hired for it's script. Scribe Dan Mazeau will write a draft. The only tidbit of information known is that The Flash may be a police officer and we could see Kid Flash. It's likely we'll be seeing a more realistic storyline.

Casting Thoughts:

Rupert Grint (Harry Potter) as Kid Flash and Josh Hartnett as The Flash

Jamie Chung (Dragon Ball) or Grace Park (Battlestar Galactica) as Linda Park

B.P.R.D. (TBA)

During an interview with MTV Guillermo del Toro has given his blessing for B.P.R.D. spin-off film. The interesting part is that it would feature a new director. Considering he's going to be busy for three years with two Hobbit films. He understands that Hellboy fans like myself are anxiously waiting for another movie. The idea is to have a B.P.R.D. film that could or could not feature Hellboy. At the end of Hellboy 2 the group quits so it would make sense that there would be replacements. I could see this movie setting up and introducing the unused members of B.P.R.D. for the third/last Hellboy movie.

Mike Mignola is someone I think might be replacing del Toro. Although there are many directors del Toro has worked with over the years. They include Vincenzo Natali (Splice), Juan Antonio Bayona (Orphanage), Alejandro González Iñárritu (21 Grams) and Alfonso Cuarón (Children Of Men). All of which would easily expand the Mignola universe.

My personal choice would be to see Swedish director Tomas Alfredson take on the project. Let The Right One In was the greatest horror film of 2008 and a horror background would be needed.

The Mechanic (Remake)

Stallone is looking to remake yet another gangster classic. He has already starred in a American version of Get Carter. Although this update will be more of a re-envisioning involving a spy theme.

Ryan Gosling, Cillian Murphy, Ben Foster and Elijah Wood have all been rumored to be involved.

Cloud Atlas (TBA)

First Showing is reporting a very interesting news story. The Wachowskis and German director Tom Tykwer (Perfume, Run Lola Run) are developing an adaptation of the novel by David Mitchell. The novel comprised of six separate but loosely related narratives that weave together history, science, suspense, humor and pathos. It's unknown at this point who will direct or write The Wachowskis or Tykwer. In any case the film could end becoming very anticipated no matter what.

According to /Film Natalie Portman was rumored to be involved in a Cloud Atlas film.

Broken Lizard presents Freeloaders (2009)

While Broken Lizard has been talking about many projects in development. One has actually starting casting. Considered a rock star hanger-on comedy, revolves around five guys and a girl who live in the lap of luxury in a rock star's mansion but see their lifestyle threatened. While Broken Lizard will only produce the comedy, it's expected to see a few cameos from the group.

Clifton Collins Jr, Dave Foley (Kids In The Hall) and Nat Faxon (Beerfest) will star.

Along with Adam Duritz (Counting Crows), Olivia Munn (Attack of The Show), Brit Morgan and Jane Seymuor (Wedding Crashers).

Gulliver's Travels (2010)

Based on the classic tale although with an updated spin. Travel writer Lemuel Gulliver (Jack Black) takes an assignment in Bermuda, but ends up on the island of Liliput, where he towers over its tiny citizens.

Emily Blunt (Wolf Man) has been added to the cast. Although her involvement could disprove the rumor of her attachment to Iron Man 2. The always amusing Jason Segel (I Love You Man) will also be featured in the film.

Del Toro & Barker present Born (TBA)

Masters of horror Guillermo del Toro and Clive Barker are working together on an interesting project. "As they settle into their new home in a quiet English town, a married couple is terrorized by the husband's creations -- claymation figures that come to life, and begin to act out a nightmarish scenario"

Paul Bettany , Jennifer Connelly and Paul Kaye (who also wrote the script) have all been attached to the project.

January 29, 2009

The Thing Prequel (TBA)

Universal Pictures & Strike Entertainment (Children of Men, Dawn of The Dead) are developing a prequel to John Carpenter's The Thing. Officially set before the events of the original film and focusing on the Norwegian research team that discovers the alien ship buried in the ice. Their eventual discovery of the alien organism that ends up killing them off. Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. will have his directorial debut. Ronald D. Moore the genius behind the new Battleship Galactica will be writing the script with Zack Snyder producing.

Tomb Raider 3 (2011)

It's rumored that there is a third Tomb Raider movie in the works. If that isn't enough Europa Press (Spain) includes Megan Fox could be replacing Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft. They also believe that the studio is looking for a 2010 shoot with a 2011 release date. While I think video game adaptations are usually a big gamble. The two installments of Tomb Raider did very well at the box office and there are still fans out there. Jolie isn't my favorite actress she seems very abrasive on screen and I avoid her films at all costs. This being said Lara Croft is a great character one part Indiana Jones one part James Bond. I would really like to see Croft rebooted in a new film.

Update: According to The Hollywood Reporter, while Tomb Raider is returning to theaters. It's with Warner Bros. not Paramount. Warner purchased Eidos Interactive which owns Tomb Raider and will be developing another film. It will be a reboot rather than a sequel. Which I had been hoping for. Also Megan Fox may not be in the running as earlier reported. My casting thoughts are that they will need actresses already working on large films. American actresses Malin Akerman (Watchmen), Olivia Wilde (Tron 2.0) and Megan Fox (Transformers 1-2) come to mind. Unless they go with authentic British actresses such as Michelle Ryan (Jekyll, Doctor Who), Emily Blunt (Wolfman, Iron Man 2) and Gemma Arterton (Prince of Persia).

Many directors will be looked at since this will be an attempted blockbuster. With producer Dan Lin attached I could see Guy Ritchie becoming an option. Since Lin is producing Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes reboot it would make sense.

Lost Planet (TBA)

With large video game epics such as Halo and Gears of War in film development. Capcom and Warner Bros. will have their work cut out for them with their live-action adaptation of Lost Planet. The ambitious science fiction project is estimated to have a budget of between $150-200 million dollars. The investment of this size leads me to believe that they hope to make this a franchise. By spending the money needed upfront to make sure the first installment is quality could work out to sequels.

David Hayter (Watchmen, X2) will write the script. Which gives me the idea that Zack Snyder or Bryan Singer could end up directing.

My Casting Picks:

Rain (Ninja Assassin) or Daniel Henney (Wolverine) as Wayne

Rose Byrne (Sunshine) or Carice van Houten (Black Book) as Luka

Damian Lewis (Band of Brothers) or Peter Stormare (Minority Report) as Yuri

Michael Angarano (Forbidden Kingdom, Snow Angels) as Rick

Tintin: Secret Of The Unicorn (2010)

The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn

The first installment written by Steven Moffat (Coupling, Doctor Who, The Office & Jekyll) and Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim, Hot Fuzz). It will be directed by Steven Spielberg with Peter Jackson producing. The film will revolve around the history of the ship named The Unicorn and the secret it holds. The secret itself could revolve around the location of the pirate Red Rackham's treasure.

CAST:

Jamie Bell (King Kong) as Tintin.

Andy Serkis (LOTR) as Captain Haddock.

Simon Pegg & Nick Frost as Thompson and Thomson.

Daniel Craig will play the villainous pirate Red Rackham.

Toby Jones (Frost/Nixon) most likely will play Professor Cuthbert Calculus.

Mackenzie Crook (Pirates 1-3) and Gad Elmaleh (Coco) are also officially cast but their roles are unknown.

Kill Bill Vol. 3 & 4 (TBA)

A while back I read an unbelievable article on Film Ick reporting that there were plans on making volumes three and four. Now Tarantino Archives has a quote from Tarantino himself bringing up the project. While interviewing Quentin on the set of Inglourious Basterds he revealed Kill Bill 3 as his possible next film.

Kill Bill Volume 3 would be the revenge story of two killers whose arms and eyes were hacked by Uma Thurman in the first volume. This reveals that this could be Sophie Fatale and Elle Driver. I could also see surviving members of Crazy 88s teaming up them. The Japanese series Lone Wolf & Cub was a large influence on both films. Shogun Assassin, one of the films was watched during volume 2. I could see Tarantino basing the third film on the series. Having the pair work together while fighting off deadly assassins.

Kill Bill Volume 4 would then focus on the battle between Bibi Kiddo and Nikia Green, an idea which Tarantino had been very vocal about during the film’s theatrical release. It's also rumored that daughters of Elle Driver and Gogo Yubari could also be involved. Of course the timeline would be ten or so years from the first two volumes.

Charlie's Angels 4 (TBA)

Drew Barrymore has expressed interest in bringing back Charlie's Angels. Although nothing official has been announced and director McG seems to be busy for the next couple of years. If the fourth installment happens along with the girls we could see the return of Crispin Glover and Shia LaBeouf. It was also mentioned that Rihanna could be a fourth angel.

Judd Apatow presents Slasher Flick (TBA)

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea: Captain Nemo

Disney seems to think that 20, 000 Leagues Under The Sea will be their next franchise. Adding "Captain Nemo" to their new remake's title gives this impression. Director McG who will be helming the new Terminator trilogy is taking the project on. He has the prefect visual skills needed for this Disney epic. Along with the experience needed for a large scale science fiction action film. It's not known at this time if they'll keep the time period the same as the original film and novel.

Update: McG recently mentioned how much he'd like to have Will Smith star. It's unknown if Smith would play the obsessive Captain Nemo or sailor Ned Land. It would be interesting to see Will play a villain in a huge blockbuster.

January 13, 2009

Mother Trucker (TBA)

The film is based from an Maxim article. It's story follows a man who escapes prison, hijacks an 18-wheeler, and heads across the South to see his dying mother. Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan) will write and direct. Inspired by "Smokey & The Bandit" the movie will be an action-comedy.

Cancer Vixen (TBA)

Based on the novel by Marisa Acocella Marchetto. Cate Blanchett acquired the rights to the novel and hopes the film to be a starring vehicle for herself. A Sex In The City type character who's world is forever changed when she discovers she has breast cancer.

"Tells the story of a successful cartoonist for magazines like “The New Yorker” and “Glamour” who lives in New York City and battled breast cancer in 2004 and 2005 – without health insurance. "
