New Line has a horror hit on their hands with The Conjuring, the studio is already developing a sequel and two spin-offs. One of those spin-offs will be Annabelle, focusing on the creepy doll that cameoed in The Conjuring. While James Wan won't be directing, he will be producing the film with his cinematographer John Leonetti handling directing duties.
TheWrap reports that the studio has cast Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders) and Ward Horton (The Wolf of Wall Street) as the film's two leads. The Conjuring featured real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, which were played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. Considering Annabelle ends up in the possession of the Warrens, I expect the pair will return unless these new actors are playing younger versions of the Warrens.
I'm a huge fan of what James Wan has been doing with Insidious and The Conjuring, helping to build amazing Hollywood horror franchises. Making legitimate scary films that aren't reboots, taking cues from movies like Amityville Horror and The Exorcist. I'm a bit worried that Wan isn't directing but being involved as a producer could help control it's quality.
