Akira (February 2nd 2011)
Ruairi Robinson will be directing the live-action adaptation of Katsuhiro Ôtomo's epic manga series. The massive 6 volume manga will be apdapted into two films. It's script was written by Gary Whitta (Book of Eli) and seems to have an altered version of the original story. It's location is set in Manhattan instead Japan. In New York, Manhattan island is sold to Japan after it's destroyed during a economical disaster. So now the island newly named "Neo Tokyo" is populated by both Americans and Japanese. This change may have happened so that both Asian and Western actors can be cast. Along with the fact the film would have to be in English while keeping the Asian influence. Warner Bros. and Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way are planning on releasing the first part in 2011. It's rumored for a February 2nd release date but that will most likely change.
Casting Thoughts:
Leonardo DiCaprio or Daniel Henney (Wolverine) as Kaneda
Elijah Wood or Rain (Ninja Assassin) as Tetsuo
Rachel McAdams (Sherlock Holmes) or Rinko Kikuchi (Brothers Bloom) as Kay
Ray Winstone or Takeshi Kitano (Battle Royale, Zatoichi) as Shackleton
Ellen Page or Ahney Her (Gran Torino) as Kaori
Sung Kang (Die Hard 4) and Joon Park (Speed Racer) as other gang members.
