Stan Lee Believes A SILVER SURFER Film Is Around The Corner

MTV caught up with comic legend and Marvel creator/writer Stan "The Man" Lee. He revealed previous plans that Marvel wants to make Ant-Man and Guardians of The Galaxy. Including long rumored projects like Doctor Strange and Black Panther. The latter two, Lee and Marvel's Kevin Feige had been talking up for years as excellent poetiental films. Stan also brought up that a Silver Surfer movie is still in the works but would be way down the line. Lee is in the loop more than others concerning the Marvel films and it would be interesting to see Fox or Marvel actually tackle the origin story.

Back at Marvel, they are frantically looking for what is the next one they’re going to do. There is no way they won’t eventually do a Silver Surfer movie. It may not be for a few years because they’re thinking and working on Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Ant-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy. Everything we have. And the fans seem to want all of them. But they’ll get around to a Silver Surfer feature because he’s a wonderful character.

At this point 20th Century Fox sill holds the film rights to The Silver Surfer. They were even trying to put together a solo film a while back with J. Michael Straczynski (Captain Planet, He-Man, Thor, Fantastic Four 1-2, World War Z, Babylon 5) writing a draft of a script and Alex Proyas (Dark City, I Robot, The Crow) attached to direct. Laurence Fishburne (the voice of the Silver Surfer) and Doug Jones (his body) were contracted to reprise the role in future films. The project would eventually be put on hold because as it would have had been a sequel of sorts to the second Fantastic Four film (which was a bit of a disappointment). A Fantastic Four reboot is currently underway and will shoot this Summer, so it's unknown Fox's plans for The Silver Surfer. Considering Fox has Deadpool and possible other X-Men films/sequels as their current focus.

However, the rights could eventually go back to Marvel if they had their way. During the renewal talks for the Daredevil film rights between Marvel and 20th Century Fox. Marvel had offered an extension to the studio in exchange for the use of Silver Surfer and Galactus. It had been reported that Marvel wanted to include the characters in Guardians of The Galaxy and or their cosmic side of the MCU. Nothing official came of it and the Daredevil rights reverted back to Marvel. It's possible Marvel could have negoationed an announced deal concerning the Silver Surfer rights which are linked to The Fantastic Four. A new Fantastic Four reboot (needed to be made or rights would also revert back to Marvel) will shoot this Summer and might allow Fox to link that franchise with X-Men Days of Future Past. Rumblings that Mark Millar would help Fox string the Marvel films into their own cohesive MCU. X-Men Days of Future Past was expected to be the first film and would fix all the issues of X3/Origins by streamlining a single vision for the X-Men franchise.
